Garmin 305 price?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin 305 price?

HEY OUT THERE IN CYCLING LAND. CHRISTMAS IS COMING AND I MAY BE GIVEN A GARMIN EDGE WITH SPEED AND HEARTRATE. I have noticed a wide price variation- Walmart for 260 new and Garmin store for over 500. Why the difference? Are they different versions?

prices do seem to very widely. make sure you are not comparing the "kit" price vs the "computer" price

fyi: the edge 500 kit is available for $250 (includes cadence and heart rate sensors)

According to the add it contains all the addons-handlebar mount, HR and speed/cadence sensors.

I got mine (Edge 305 factory refurb) from somewhere in eBay for $190 w/cadence and HR. I don't remember exactly who the dealer was.

Just curious, is there a reason to go with a 305 over the 500? After comparing them on Garmin's website I don't see much difference and the 500 is smaller, lighter and cheaper (although the Garmin site isn't exactly clear on whether or not the 305 includes the HR and cadence but the picture does so not sure).

the 305 has a history of quality problems (i.e. randomly turning off)

i have only heard of software issues with the 500 and it sounds like these have now all been corrected through updates.

Great price though I am somewhat leery of a refurb. Should I be? Is there a valid warranty with the refurb?

No reason except in my initial search for a new computer ( 5 year old Cateye Astral 8 on the blink), I went for the basic entry unit. I do not need the power application or maps.

I have heard and read this also, here on BF and other sites. I thought the power difficulties had been resolved and this was in fact part of my question- are the wide price differences reflective of units made earlier with the power issues?

Save yourself a headache down the road and get the 500. The extra battery life alone makes it worthwhile.

I went through a couple of 305's (the auto-shut-off problem). Got the 500 as soon as it came out. Thankfully I bought at REI.

Incidentally, REI stopped carrying the 305 as there were too many returns.

It came with a one year warranty, and I had to use the warranty for mine. I had registered it with Garmin when I bought it, and there was absolutely no problem with warranty service. The problem with mine was that the elevation/gradient mechanism was messed up. I called them, explained the situation, and received a return authorization number with no argument whatsoever. I was Garmin-less for about a week.

Thanks for the info- yes I noticed REI did not carry the 305. My only concern with the 500 is lock-up of the screen and data corruption issues one reads about. New soft ware released in June 2010 seems to have solved the problem- at least according to Garmin. How often does this occur?

my research showed that it was rare and the software update fixed it. no problems with mine so far (only a few rides)

putting the 500 next to the 305 made it a no brainer for me.

the $80 edge 305 sale at best buy also scared me towards the 500.
