Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

UK online shops

Are packages taking longer these days from the UK online bike shops these days? I ordered two pairs of Conti GP4000S tires, a wind jacket and a stem from PBK right before Thanksgiving and it still has not arrived. It's been more than two weeks since it was shipped. Their reply was "Homeland Security". Just yesterday I oreded some winter clothes for Ribble. See how long it takes it to get here.

Probably just the Christmas backlog. I ordered stuff in November last year from PBK and it didn't arrive until January.

chainreactioncycles.com has the best delivery. their regular service (parcelforce) comes with a tracking number. i'll pay the couple of percent difference for the peace of mind.

Yeah, that is when they shipped mine as well only to the west coast. Back in summer, during that volcano, it took only a week. I was impressed.

I really like buying the Giordana bib shorts from Ribble. Great price and kinda cheap shipping. I'll check out CRC tho.

I also purchased a couple of base layers approximately 2 weeks ago and they are not here yet.
Interestingly enough, they arrived in the states two days after placing my order. Should we blame customs and the USPS?

We just got our order from Carradice and it took about 10 days to get here (UK to Australia). 10 days seems all right, especially given that it is Christmas.

wow, I'm surprised at the length of time your orders have taken to arrive. I've ordered from PBK many times and get things in about a week. I do like chainreactioncycles' shipping better because you can track it, but haven't had an issue with PBK losing anything yet.

I have bad news. A couple of days ago, most online shops stopped taking orders for guaranteed pre-christmas delivery in UK. If it ain't there yet, it ain't gonna be there before Christmas.

You could throw a rock at England from New Jersey and hit PBK Ok, not really, but almost compared to where some of us live in North America. In June it took two weeks for one jersey to arrive. Find a site that price matches, plug in the values, ship domestically. There's your peace of mind.

While I order from both PBK and Chainreaction Cycles on a regular basis. I do prefer ordering from CR for the tracking alone. The only drawback is the shipping unless you spend $250 for the free shipping offer. Works out great if I have a bigger order but not so great for smaller orders..... that's when PBK gets my business. The lack of tracking does kinda suck but at times the prices are great.

It's never taken this long for a shipped item to arrive, and I should know, I bought from PBK when the Icelandic volcano shot down the UK airports... hopefully my jacket will be here before the winter ends.

I ordered a bunch of stuff from Ribble bikes on Dec 1 still have yet to see it and tracking has been at the same place for days. Tey had some snow storms there and the xmas holidays I think are backing things up. Glad to see this post because I was thinking the same thing.

I got notice that my Assos jacket had shipped from Slane Cycles on Nov. 26, but still haven't received it. Sent Royal Mail, but Royal Mail's tracking number system just says "your item, posted on 26/11/10 has been passed to the overseas postal service for delivery in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."

That's helpful.

If I remember correctly your tracking number should work with the USPS site once its been handed over to them

-Sram Apex Front Brake: shipped 11/24/2010, one day after my order. Has yet to show up
-Conti gatorskinsx2 and a balaclava: shipped 12/08/2010. They better show up quick as one of my gatorskins is trashed after 5000 miles of use. They were shipped five days (3biz days) after the order was processed
-Wool glove liners and wool socks: ordered 12/05/2010, has yet to be shipped

Lesson learned: don't order between November and late December.

The UK's also experiencing rather an extreme winter at the moment, which is doubtless also affecting their postal system.

Ah bummer, doesn't sound like the tubulars that shipped a week ago are going to be here in time to mount and race in January.

Here is an email reply I got from the shippers:

The situation across the majority of the UK continues to improve, with significant numbers of additional deliveries being made in many areas which have been affected recently by the severe weather.

The safety of our customers, the general public and our employees remains of paramount importance. We would like to thank you for your continued patience and understanding during these continued difficult conditions and again apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

For the latest updates in your area, please visit our website www.parcelforce.com and click on 'Service Update' link on the Customer News section of our main page.

Due to the volume of emails that we are currently receiving, we aim to reply to your enquiry within the next three working days. Please be advised if you have not yet received a response we have your email and will aim to reponsed as soon as possible.

I ordered my San Marco RegalE from a UK bike store (not PBK) and it took a long time. Almost 4 weeks. When I called USPS they told me it was caught up in customs, and that although random, is quite normal for customers to have to put up with it. The only good thing about it being held up in customs, was that USPS ended up scanning my saddle way more than usual, allowing me to actually track a USPS package for once.
