Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for opinions?

Hi. I'm looking to get my first road bike. Been going on a few weekend rides with friends and I've been having a lot of fun with it. I've been riding my old mountain bike, if you can even call it that. I got a chance to ride my friend's road bike, a 2010 Scattante R-330, and I liked the feel of a road bike a whole lot better than my mountain bike. Not exactly the pinnacle of biking technology, but that sort of bike will do it for me. Anyways, I was wondering if this bike was a good deal? Or more like worth the 800 bucks, really.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated, I'm a complete newby haha. Oh I was also looking at this:

Thoughts? THanks.

I just bought a 2011 Giant Defy 1 and I absolutely love it. I think he is asking a little bit to much for the bike since I just paid $1040 for the 2011 version. You might want to ask what he is including with the bike like clipless pedals, bottle holder, computer, etc. If nothing is included then I would ask for a lower price. Keep in mind it's like selling/buying a car or a house. The buyer wants it for less and the seller wants it for more. Come up with a price that you can live with.

Sounds like a lot for the Defy and I don't trust an ad where the actual product is not pictured.

The Defy is priced high for what it is - an aluminum framed bike with 105 group and almost no-name wheels.

The Roubaix is fine for a new bike. Similar frame and wheel quality with a lesser group. But it is new.

Dare I say....check out that site that sells new bikes with old school names on them.

I have seen a Scattante up close and they don't look that good to me.

Since your in the Bay area, visit this shop https://www.goridebicycles.com/Site/Closeoutlist.htm . The 09 Six 6 or the CAAD 9-6 is $900.

Or for an extra $200 you could get the CAAD9-5, which has the 105 group and is a very worthwhile upgrade over the Tiagra group on the 9-6.
