Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ultegra and a 38t small ring??

Looking forward to next season and some of the stage races in the Northeast, like Tour of Catskills and GMSR. My wife and I are both running 53x39's and will have an 11x28 for those races.

Had thought about swapping out the 39t for a 38t, but from what I can see Shimano doesn't make one. I see that FSA has a 38t, but how would this affect shifting??

I know we'll both need that little bit extra for the climbs in those races...

Oops...Should have mentioned, Ultegra 6700

Are you sure the 38 from FSA has a 130BCD?

I'm pretty sure it's a 110BCD for a MTB.

With a 130 BCD crankset the smallest you can go is 39. If you want to go lower you need to go to a compact crank. Then you are running 50/34. You may also have to change you front derailluer but, at the very least you will need to adjust it.

I believe the RD6700 is limited to 28t...

And yes the FSA 38t is 130BCD...

The newest Shimano Factory Tech Manual I have is for RD6600. I think you are right about the max capacity being 28T.

The FSA chainring might be the least expensive option. It won't give you a lot and shifting will suffer.

wtf?

38T chainrings are standard on cross bikes, using the same BCD cranks as road racing bikes.

I might also mention that 53 vs 38 is still less of a jump than 50 vs 34. I doubt you will notice much of a difference in your front derailleur shifting.

the point is that you can use whatever crank you have. SRAM also makes 38T chainrings. A bunch of companies do.

however, I think the gains (gains of negative speed? ) are going to be hardly noticeable. As much as I hate to agree with 10wheels, you just won't see much of a difference by only reducing the front ring by one tooth.

Yea Grumpy...I went to Sheldon's site and saw the difference was pretty minor...I guess any way we slice it we shall be suffering

Unless we went compact, which is not going happen at this point...

I know some riders who have done both of those events. I haven't done either.

As I recall one of the guys in the ToC was using 53/39 and 11/28. He was fairly competitive but did not podium. I doubt the difference was in the gearing.

I do know a guy who has won the GMSR a few times in the Masters. I don't know what his gearing was, but am assuming he used his standard crankset, since I see him on it anyway and there's a crit.
