Campy 11sp compatibility - quick question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Campy 11sp compatibility - quick question

Are wheels that are listed as "Campy 9/10sp compatible" also compatible with the new 11sp?

I'm trying to find a cheap, entry-level Campy wheelset for a friend. he's getting an 11sp group for christmas and doesn't know it yet. I know the guy doesn't have the cash to buy a new set of campy wheels just yet, so I wanted to get him something to roll on until he does.

for example,

It depends on the hub design. For instance, the White Industries H3 was changed to be 11 speed compatible:
H3 version is Campy 11 speed compatible.
Neither the H2, nor any previous generation White Industries hub will work with Campy 11 speed. The newest 11 speed system requires the largest cog to cantilever over the hub shell and our older hubs were not engineered based upon this design.
But other manufacturers older hubs may work OK, and don't need a redesign.

Campy wheels should all work, but other brands can be questionable. I had no problems with Mavic Ksyriums. Some DT hubs don't work and neither will some of the cheap Asian made wheelsets. You need to pick a wheelset and investigate it carefully.

With Mavic wheels, they make a cheap spacer you put on the freehub first before the cassette.

But unfortunately the answer is above, where it really varies.

Huh, its been a long time since I've bought off the shelf Mavic rims for a wheel build but they were all made in France. I've never seen a Mavic rim made in Taiwan like that CXP22.

Well that peaked my curiosity, and looking at the Mavic website it's only the CXP22 not made in France. Even their other entry level rims are. I wouldn't consider those rims Mavic then, just somebody else's with a Mavic sticker.

No worries though with the intended purpose and nice gift. You'll have to do some research on those Formula hubs though for 11-speed.

what i initially tried to do was contact Ritchey for the parts to his current wheel, so i could convert them to campy. impossible.

i found these wheels on ebay, then cheaper on BikeIsland:

https://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_S...ls&ProdID=1220

they're Vuelta Pro Race. they're heavy, but so is my friend i realize these are cheap-as-hell rims.

the question is, i guess - do i get my buddy a gift certificate so he can buy some good rims and he CAN'T use them right away...
...or do i buy some cheapo rims so he CAN ride right away?

Any wheels using a NOVATEC hub will be ok.
