Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I like riding at sunrise. Do you?

This morning we left my house at 6:30 a.m.
///

Fifteen minutes later, as we passed Fort Rosecrans Cemetery, the sun began to rise. Coronado Island is to the left. San Diego Bay is in the center of the photo. And Mexico is to the far right.
///

Jimmy D and I have pedaled thousands of miles together. Today we did hill repeats at the tip of Point Loma. By the way, you can see another Coronado Island to the far right in this photo. This island is owned by the United States of Mexico.
///

As the sun gets higher we begin to head toward home.
///

But first we stop for coffee.

those are some nice photos, but generally, i do not like to ride early unless it is a leisurely ride. i prefer riding in the afternoon or evening as i feel my energy levels are higher. thanks for the nice photos.

Where I live it's still dark at that time of the morning.
And 15 degrees (f).
And then there's this thing called work I need to be at by 8:00am.

I hate you guys!

edit: I do like getting out at 5:30am during the summer - the best riding of the day.

Great pics! It's too cold for that here, but during the summer I love hitting the road at 6 am. It can be so peaceful without cars on the road!

I ride in the wee hours of the morning almost out of necessity. It's the only time I can get most of my small club together (before work)

There was a local rider killed at sunset last spring. He was riding into the sun. The truck behind him could not see because of the sun that was blinding him.
No, I do not like riding at sunset.

I'd probably like it more if I didn't drink so much.

Riding at Sunrise or Sunset, getting hit by a car blinded by solar glare is always in the back of my head.

I'm still envious of Nacho and 10 Wheels for being able to ride in such nice conditions this time of year.

Of course. Part of the year I start out in the pre-dawn Mordor like darkness here with the bike lights and ride while the sun comes up. Very cool.

While I agree that pretty much everything is better at sunrise, I think that's only when you're up at sunrise by choice. I tend to be up before sunrise far too often to enjoy it much anymore. You've inspired me to get up early one of these weekends (when it warms up, I think) and go for a nice long ride. It'll probably be a really great, peaceful time.

Sunrise in Montreal these days is 7:34am! Also, it's cold...cold and dark. IN the summer when it's light and hot, I like to ride early in the morning. Winter? I would rather be sleeping!

Arizona is famous for our sunsets. But our sunRISES are usually much more spectacular!

I ride every morning I can at about 6:30, despite being a night person, there is something about starting off the day with a ride that improves the whole day. If only it weren't so cold out this time of year.

Unfortunately, yes. It goes with the territory commuting in the Northeast. I don't like riding in traffic during commuting hours, especially at dawn or dusk with limited light. It's dangerous. But it beats riding the trainer hands down.
