Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Naw, there has to be somewhat of a standardization and pedals/cages has been the "standard" for quite some time.

edit: Although I do believe cleats should have to at least get mentioned. I don't like reading about 150g pedals with no mention of their 125g cleat counterparts.

That explains it. I didn't buy a scale, I bought a balance.

I always like to follow the Peloton Magazine "real weights" standard. Bike + pedals + two cages + one empty bottle (sometimes computer).

because thats what you're probably hauling up a hill during a ride and/or race.

https://pelotonmagazine.com/video/rea...loton-edition/

^its not a better way to weigh bikes per se but it just seems more fun and impressive to have something that is literally under 15lbs/14lbs/13lbs/ect with everything on it because you can really imagine it.

to add to the "real weight" discussion... when this thread was really going crazy.... (i think it was almost two years ago) we started to weigh our shoes + cleats at one point. lol

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...1#post13836688

the thing that you really pick up as a weight weenie after a while is you can shorthand what is the price/weight savings quick.

like titanium axles for pedals are usually great ways to save weight without breaking the bank. also finding sub 1500g clincher wheels (with weight weenie rim tape) + light tires and tubes (conti 4000s even the 25c versions are under 220g and 50g conti supersonic tubes) can be just as light as sub 1400g tubeless wheels + 300g tubeless tires + glue and valve extenders.

I remember these days as well. Some of the stuff you guys were doing to Carbon Derailleurs and shoes and other important parts was pretty crazy. give a crowd a thread that says "Use your dremel to reduce weight" and people will accept that challenge. RunningDoc and Ravenmore along with a few others, I used to tune in for on a daily basis just to se what you guys would cut up next.

This thread has been dead for awhile. I picked this up recently:

Schmolke TLO OS (31.8). Needed more reach and I figured I should drop a little weight while I was at it. 146g on my scale.

wow.... That's a light handlebar. For kicks... I weighed by Tarmac Today.

16.0 lbs w/ pedals / cages and garmin 510.
2009 Tarmac Comp
DA 9000
3T Egronova Team handlebar
3T Arc Team Stem
Toupe Pro Saddle
KCNC Skewers
Look Keo Blade 2 Ti Pedals
random wheels that I need to upgrade... if I ever get around to it.

I can probably easily get this bike down to 15.5 lbs with a wheel upgrade... after that.... I think I need a new frame if i wanted to drop some serious weight.

You can drop a ton of weight without spending a ton of money by switching wheels (especially these days). You should weigh your wheels just to get an idea.

Running a Soul 2.0 Front and a Mavic Aksium rear. I had to go back to my old heavy Aksium when i went to 11 speed. I've weighed everything individually in the past. Looking at my old spreadsheet... I gained back 300grams from swapping from my Soul 2.0 Rear to my Mavic Aksium rear.

The 2009 Specialized Tarmac Comp frame set is pretty heavy for carbon
Frame - 1142g (w/ headset cups)
Fork - 422g (w/ headset crown race)
rest of headset - 63g

I want to build up a semi-light wheelset ~1400g. Something with more durable hubs over vs my Soul 2.0s. But the setup just works... so I haven't touch it.

There's a "what does your aluminum bike weigh" thread around here somewhere. I think I gave a breakdown in it. But basically It starts with a light frameset, ~1500gms, light wheels, 1295gms and crank/BB, 570gms. Every other component down to the cable housing has been addressed.

so made a few changes to my bike, so I thought I'd weigh it again. New top cap and steerer plug from Fairwheel bikes. (because the top cap that came with the bike was the wrong size, and the new one adds a little bling).

Lighter speedplay pedals, lighter zipp skewers and an 11-23 Sram cassette. (all stuff I had lying around).

Net change was to drop the weight from 13.85lbs to 13.42lbs.

Wouldn't be too hard to get it under 13lbs if I eliminated, or changed the power meter (Sram Red power meter crank is fairly piggy) put on lighter tires, and did some weight weenie stuff, like cutting excess seatpost, excess steerer tube, removing spacers, etc.

But it's a bike to race not a weight weenie project.

I put *me* on a diet. Now my bike/rider combination is 40 lb. lighter, and I can feel the difference in power-to-weight ratio.

How do you actually know how much weight you're saving? Aren't listed weights sometimes inaccurate? And don't you have to somehow disassemble and weigh each part you're considering replacing before you know precisely how much you'll save by switching to something else?
