Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It costs more money, takes up more floor space, and once you get used to not having the bike locked on one plane it's no big deal. There's one in Westwood. Go try it yourself.

it isn't. it you wanted an interesting trainer that did basically the same thing get the e-motion rollers. otherwise keep riding outside when it's 10 degrees.

I just got a Kurt trainer - boring as all get out...and us guys in the NE aren't as lucky as the guy in the video. If I decided to move back to Santa Cruz/No. California - I'd be out everyday. It's about 10 degrees outside here in MA and there's no compulsion to be a hard man and train when there's ice, salt, inattentive drivers & crappola on the road.

I have one. It's nicer then the base KK, but not the end all. I like the movement but it's still a trainer. Look on ebay, I paid around $350 for mine. My LBS is suppose to get some LeMond trainers with the cassette in this week, they look interesting.

For the price, meh. I'm still debating whether getting the KK Road Machine makes sense since I can still get a work out on my crappy hand-me-down trainer, plus I ride through the winter so it's only the really bad weather that keeps me indoors. The noise issue is one selling point because the magnetic trainer I have is loud...

I have one. Love it. I've never tried a conventional fixed trainer so I have nothing to compare it to.

I have one and it makes riding the trainer far more acceptable than a fixed trainer. The bike has a small natural side to side movement even when seated which provides stress relief for my back, knees and hips. My knees don't ache from trainer workouts like they used to. I emailed Kurt Kinetic and asked where there was a shop near me (Westchester county, NY)that had one in stock that I could ride. They responded quickly. I checked it out and liked it. If I had more head room in my basement I probably would have gotten the e-motion rollers (which I haven't ridden). My ass still hurts more on the trainer than on the road even though I try to constantly shift in the saddle and stand but I think the problem is better on the KK rock and roll. I had been concerned that the slight up and down of the trainer would be annoying but it's not.

I'm looking at them. I like the idea of having some motion. I've read some complaints that they bounce up and down a little, but that the type of front wheel support can help that.

I'll have to check out Ebay. I have not looked there.

The bouncing isn't obtrusive at all. A quick vid to show:

Do you have one? I do and it is the best trainer out there. Only down side is its size, if you want to lug it to races find a static trainer.
This trainer has doubled my indoor cycling. The movement creates a very natural road feel, the feeling that you can't stand another minute of indoor cycling evaporates. I still prefer outdoors, even in the winter but there are times , like this week, that 30 inches of snow, constant plow trucks keep me indoors, When that happens this trainer makes a world of difference.

I considered the RNR but eventually went with the Road Machine mostly due to space issues. It also helped that I got the RM free with AMEX points.

Yeah, don't it suck? I moved to MA from the SF Bay Area a couple of years ago. Definitely looking to relocate back at the first opportunity.

Yeah, I like Gary's idea, I'd try the emotion rollers, maybe have a few spectacular mishaps, but learn how to ride them. Can't be harder than skiing moguls.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Road Machine.
The R&Rr seems like it would definitely make being on a trainer more bearable.
From what I see, there is a $170. difference between the two. I think it's worth it.
I have this feeling that I will always wonder "what if" while training on a RM.
I think I'm going to wait and get a R&R trainer.

It's either that, or a used CX bike that I won't mind getting all fudged up with salt and slush and mud.

No, because I've ridden one numerous times and thought is was silly for the reasons I outlined in my post.

I prefer the emotion rollers, and I promise I ride indoors more than you

Yeah, that eMotion video is cool, that's the ticket. If I was going to ride indoors. Not yet. Maybe one of these days. I would like to try them. In a rubber room. With a safety net. And an ambulance standing by.
