Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikers finally get the rear-view camera

The answer to the question you did not ask ...

Bikers finally get the rear-view camera they deserve
Posted: Jan. 19 2011 by Damon Lavrinc

Cars, crossovers and trucks have been available with back-up cameras for the better part of a decade and now bicyclists will finally be able to get in on the action with a little help from Cervellum.

While the Rael concept bike above is the product of Evan Solida's imagination, the 3.5-inch transflective LCD mounted on the handlebars is very much a reality. Cervellum's Hindsight 30 system utilizes a camera mounted underneath the seat, but Solida opted to integrate the camera into the seat stays, making it less of an aftermarket addition and more a cohesive part of the overall design.

Along with the camera system, the Rael comes equipped with Shimano's Di2 electronic shifters and a novel handlebar solution utilizing a set of bullhorns with redesigned and reversed pistol-grip brakes hanging down to create the drops.

The rationale behind the redesign is that the rider's index fingers can better actuate the brakes whether they're gripping the hoods or tucked in and using the drops. Cervellum hasn't announced pricing or availability for the Hindsight system, but it's safe to assume it'll hit the market before Solida's creation.

Yep. So much more practical than a helmet-mounted mirror.

With my odometer and lights my dashboard is already filled up.. Great idea however.
Seems my 'take a look ,' style mirror does a decent job..

Given their fragility and propensity for 'moisture' damage I'm not sure why anyone would want to have their iPhone on their handlebars. Then again I'm not sure why one would need a backup camera on a vehicle that doesn't go backwards. Unless this is a fixie thing...which in case it's in the wrong forum.

Duh. Within a decade the head unit for your power meter or Garmin or whatever will be Ant+ compatible and accept an input for a small (bluetooth or wireless) digital rear view camera. Then you can go from looking at your speed or power numbers to a rear view of what's behind you with a touchscreen command or the push of a button.

i know why people would be interested in this device. when you overtake a slowpoke, you can look at the suffering and despair in his face without turning around.

I need to be able to switch from my data, to the movie I'm watching, to the internet to see what Pcad has posted on FB and BF.

Cervellum sounds like a company that makes female sanitary products or medical supplies.

Everyone who ever rides a bicycle will eventually become more Fredly over time. If you live long enough. Which given the nature of this sport is a dubious prospect for most of the idiots here.

This bike seems to have so many flaws it isn't funny.

First, there doesn't seem to be very much travel on the brakes, so you couldn't use them if you have the rear brakes open (of course I don't see any brakes.)
Next, the drops are too short to wrench on them in a sprint.
And why not just use a mirror?

i saw a really old guy who looked geriatric. i forgave him his handlebar mirror. he did wear a terrific yellow jersey and was on a nice bike. i was a bit surprised he could still use an aggressive road bike rather than a hybrid.

That company used to sponsor a team around me.

Anyway, one of the interesting things I was told about it, is that it records what it sees, so if a driver hits you from behind and drives off, the camera records it and that can be used to track down the driver.
