Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First century next weekend

What do you guys do the last couple of days before a century? Short rides or no riding at all? What about food? I was thinking a bunch of spaghetti the day before and some pancakes and fruit before the ride and whatever they have at rest stops during the ride. I've only been doing 40-45 mile rides the past couple of weeks, but I figure with a large group and rest stops every 25 miles, it shouldn't be a problem.

The day before you should do very little activity, no riding. Up until that some light riding is ok, just keep the mileage down. Spagetti is fine as long as you don't think the tomato sauce will give you heartburn. Get your best night's sleep 2 nights before the event as you'll probably have too much excitement/anticiupation the night before. Even thought there will be rest stops, bring some food/gels and lots of fluid with you. Pancakes and fruit is ok for breaky. Drink lots of water the day before as well.

I think you should have sex a lot. That always improves times.

yeah, but that just leads to sex in the morning and you miss the start. Hmm, sounds fine by me.

I did a 30 mile social ride before my last century and I think that helped me. But for your first century, I say see a movie and eat popcorn
