Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Avenir butyl road tubes... Anynoe use 'em?

Hey all -

I was wondering if anyone has any experience using standard butyl Avenir road tubes (700x20-25)? At 121 grams, they're not close to latex, but they can do the trick. Interested in hearing the good, bad, and ugly.

I found a pretty good deal on them through REI's online outlet for any interested ($2.93 ea.). I was thinking about getting a few to have as spares. I'm pretty sure the ones I'm referring to have a 48mm valve stem, just to clarify.

Any feedback would be helpful.

Thanks / Regards,

Kris

P.S. I apologize ahead of time if I posted this in the wrong forum.

They are probably generic made-in-China tubes. Similar to what Performance and Nashbar sell.

Thanks for your reply.

Most of the butyl tubes are made in China... just like the the uber lightweight comp versions that I'm running right now. I'm not really worried about the country of origin. As long as they hold up and don't puncture every other time I ride - that's all I'm concerned about.

I was wondering if someone on this forum has any hands-on experience using these particular ones. Yeah... for <$3 they're cheap... and I'm very familiar with the concept of getting what you pay for. But, it would be nice to stock up on some durable, inexpensive tubes.
