Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mavic Ksyrium's- red spokes????

Good day.

I just got a set of Mavic Ksyrium Elites as my everyday wheels and am looking to spice them up a bit.
I truly wanted a set of Mavis SL's, but to shed 100+ grams for 500 was not a likely proposition. I like the SL red spoke (singular) and the red rub, but want to put red spoke on my Elites.

Can you buy them individually, or am I better buying the silver spokes and getting them red anodized?

I look forward to your thought.

Save the hassle. Pony up the money and buy the wheel pre-made.

Or spray paint + heat gun.

The Elites are black spokes- so the red sharpie wont work.

Thanks, my own obsessing over some aesthetic details of my bike now seems trivial in comparison :-)

Do you also stick "Turbo" and "Type R" decals on your car?

Ride the elites, they are fine.

Don't worry about stupid red spokes, or lack thereof.

I used to own a true Type R, if you must ask. You mean to tell me decals dont add 10hp??? Hmmm...

I do seem to remember never stating that red spokes would give any sort of performance benefit, therefore your decal comment is somewhat unjustified. I did state however that I was looking to spice up the look of my bike.

Pretty clear?? I hope so.

Is it more like adding the BMW M cars' side gills to a Civic?

j/k. I like the Red Spoke too. If you like the look, keep an eye on the used market. I was riding the Elites too and I got a used set of ES from craigslist as well, with no money loss.

I love my Elites, and for the time being they will be everything that I need. That is my I want to just make some simple adjustments to make my new Pinarello a little sexier. If I would have bought a Black on Black something-or-other, I would be content with some shiny, boring wheels... But I bought a sexy Italian workhorse that likes to strut her stuff.

I wish I could just buy the red spokes from the Mavic Ksyrium SL's in bulk to achieve my appeal.

Just like a red spoke doesn't give you a performance benefit, neither do decals on your car. The point is, well, I don't really see the point. Nobody will see your way cool red spoke while you're riding, and few will likely notice it when you're stopped. And even if someone notices, will they care? So why bother making it look like your wheels are SL's when they're really not? If you don't want to look like a cheap poser, then do something unique with your spokes instead of trying to pass off your wheels as SL's, like painting them day-glo yellow or something.

That said, just visit your local PepBoys or Auto Zone and buy yourself a bottle of red touch-up paint. Simple and cheap. While you're at it, get some Ksyrium SL decals and stick them on your rims, and then you'll REALLY be ballin'.

Pretty clear?? I hope so.

I never said I wanted to look like or pose to be a set of SL's... I wanted to red spokes to compliment the bike.

I dont want to dress up my bike to make me "look" fast or to get the attention of my fellow riders. Its simply, I just wanted to "spice" up the look. Pretty simple, I think. Futher, the SL's dont have all red spokes either, just one or two. So, once again, I dont want the SL's, I want something making my wheels different.

Find some old Mavic Heliums, they had red spokes.

And IIRC, SL spokes will not fit Elites.

I used to have an old set of Heliums and that is kind of where I got the idea. I guess I will have to get a set of the Spinergy Spox with the red rims.

So in other words, you want to spice up the looks of the bike while it's standing still. Still kinda pointless IMO. Especially since a single red spoke is hardly noticeable.

And as mentioned, SL spokes are different than Elite spokes.

Spinergy discontinued the SPOX years ago, didn't they?
