Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh, you'll get a ride report all right Raw, unedited video too, which is my usual style with ride videos It'll be an even better video than Snows Road, which is the next climb I plan to treat myself to when the weight's all gone.

I rode Bulmer Bank at the weekend... 1in6 with a nasty quasi-hairpin left-hander!

Ahh Ridgeview. Another El Dorado Hills favorite. I live in EDH so most of my rides end with going up Beatty or Elmores or Serrano. If I ever want to get home I have to pick one.

Another new climb from last weekend's ride. Glenview Road in Newcastle, CA. I measured a maximum grade of 19% on this climb. Judging by how loud my breathing got in the video of this ride, this has to be the 19% section I made it as difficult as possible by riding into the steepest part of this switchback

Here's a steep one from today's ride-Linden Ave. in Auburn, CA. I measured 25% on this one, and was able to climb it in the saddle thanks to my new super-low climbing gears.

The Hammerin' Wheels' website says it is around 23%.

From yesterday's ride. These are both in El Dorado Hills, CA. This is Hollow Oak Drive. I measured a maximum grade of 16%, but looking at the video I can't tell where that section is, so I'm gonna post the 15% section:

Boulder Ridge Road. 20% max grade:

Climbs here are often short and steep, the longer ones average out to something bearable. In town, I've found several neighborhood climbs over 15%. I climbed one on my fixed gear(42-15) and thought I was going to pull the handlebars off the bike. 17% grade was enough to give me pedal strikes as I weaved back and forth on the road. Thankful that it was just a block long.

South side of Keel has what I call the Right turn of Death where someone has spray painted 19% grade - Got EPO?

I haven't seen anything cool spraypainted on the road around here except for this near the top of the steep Bald Hill Road climb in Placer County, CA:

Thanks for the pics freighttraininguphill! I've ridden many of those, but not all--I'll have to go search some of them out. Just yesterday I was doing repeats on Beatty :-)

You're welcome Beatty is one of the pics I posted when I started this thread It's a little easier now than it was last July when I weighed 195 pounds on my first ride up it, but it's still one of the hardest climbs in that area.

I found another good one on Saturday while looking for Boulder Ridge Road- Marble Ridge Road. It's steep and painful too. Boulder Ridge Road dead ends at Marble Ridge Road.

I've seen the Fizik logo spray painted on Chili Hill out near Lincoln/Ophir area. I wonder what they're up to. I'm sure I'll see a few more things on the ground next week as the Amgen Tour of CA runs right past my office next week. I'll stand at the curb right before lunch and watch the riders go by. Then back to my cubicle.

I climbed that road recently. I must have missed it or I saw it and forgot to go back and take a picture.

New ones from yesterday's ride-on a single-speed Dahon folding bike. These were taken with my regular digital camera on the way back down. I have a ride video of these climbs also, but this is better quality.

New one from last weekend's ride. This is Marble Ridge Road in El Dorado Hills, CA. I measured a pretty steady 15% grade on this section.
