Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Replace Wife's 1987 Ironman Centurion with This Bike?

My wife loves her classic Ironman Centurion, but it's starting to rust.

We might take a look at this bike tomorrow

What do you think?

to get an accurate answer on bikeforums, this photo must be in front of a white garage door and of the drive side of the bike with the chain in the big front gear and smallest rear cog. no answers will be valid until these requirements are met

Assuming your wife is rather tall (that is a size large, but then again, that looks to be about a 56cm Centurion) I'd say that's a fair deal.

The Allez is a nice bike. Price seems fine. If she likes it after a test ride, go for it.

What if he does all that but leaves the bottles in the cages?

Al, where is the Centurion rusting?

If she really likes it, I wouldn't buy something new. It's not like that rust can't be fixed.

Unless, of course, you don't want to fix it. In which case I'll pay shipping to my door.

Paint is still in great condition. A little oxidation on Al components does not affect hardware integrity. There is plenty of life left on that bike.

Thanks for the advice.

The photo of the Ironman is about three years old. The rust is appearing mostly around the lugs, especially at sharp edges. It's not too bad yet, but we live a stone's throw from the ocean, and I'd been through this battle with my Bottecchia. I would sand, add five coats of etching primer, 5 coats of paint, and the rust would reappear in a month.

We'll take a look at the Allez if it's still available (seller had someone looking at it last night).

Well, we got it. Here's the "before cleanup" picture:

Got it for $360. Wife took it on a test ride and liked it. I did too. Frame size was equivalent to her Ironman.

So I'll clean it up, get a stem riser and raise the handlebars, make sure she likes it, then clean up and sell the Ironman Triathlon. Thanks for the advice.

Make sure you find that Centurion a loving home. I'd offer to take it if it were a lot bigger.

Congratulations on the new one.
