Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good not too expensive first road bike??

Hello all,

Well I use to commute on my hybrid bike two years ago and then I bought my first motorcycle. But now I am planning to get into cycling again.

I was talking to a friend of mine who told me that road bike are the way to go over hybrids if I want to do fast paced group rides. So now here I am, which would be a best beginner road bike? I am not looking at very expensive bike since this would be my first bike.

I will be doing liesurely ride and sometimes fast paced but never racing.

After you determine your budget, go to several LBS and ride as many bikes as you can. You will know the bike for you after you've ridden a few. Most importantly, get educated about what you are going to purchase from places like BF and your LBS. It will make your purchase much easier.

That's an outstanding price. I test rode one of those last year at a local outlet store and it was pretty comfy too. Seems like it'd be a good starter bike if the original poster was qualified to assemble it.

the bikes are all pretty much the same in that price range. so post #3 was good adivice, find a good shop and choose a machine that fits you well. the fit is the key to happiness. if you get a good deal on a leftover 2010, that's a bonus.

Follow these instructions:

1. Set a budget for your bicycle - don't forget helmet, shoes, pedals...
2. Go to any real bicycle shop - make sure you like it, if not go to another.
3. Find a bicycle that fits you and that you can afford.
4. Buy it.
5. Ride it.

It's that simple

Sometimes Step 1 gets repeated after Step 2 and Step 3. My "budget" for the bike alone changed three times. $700 > $1000 > $1300 > $1600. But I am definitely happy with the purchase.

Buy a older bike, used 70's around 20 lbs. I've put probably $300 with the price of bike on my road bike and I pass and travel farther then any new treks out there. A good light steal frame will last a lifetime.

You sound like you have access to all kinds of bikes in the world. Why don't you narrow your choices based on what is available to you so people can help you more efficiently and get better results.

first of all thanks all for the responses.

Well my budget to start with is around $500 - $600 dollars. I really don't want to push it coz at this point of time i don't know if i am actually into bike ride. That is because i also owe two sport motorcycles (supersports race replica) and i do ride them all year round but snow.

I was looking for a hybid bike but my friend who rides a road bike told me that it would be better to get a road bike if i am planning to go on group rides coz i will not be able to keep up with them and speed is really a factor. Personally i like the looks of a road bike (dropped handle bars)

Mainly i will be using my road bike for recreational rides and slowly increasing the ride time (long rides). I am also planning to do touring on it one day or two days not sure yet coz its too early to decide at this point.

One thought that comes to my mind is to go for a road bike available at Target or similar stores and get it tuned at a LBS. This way it would be cheaper and also i will be able to test myself if i am into biking ... is this a good way to go ?

Thanks again for the valuable opinions.

Going to Target = Bad.
Go to several bike shops tell them your budget and that you want a road bike. See what they say. I've seen totally nice starter bikes from about 699. Find a dealer with an older model in your size and he may fit your price. For my first road bike my LBS was able to build up a bike from a frame they had in stock to fit my budget. You might ask about something like that.

I see you live in Seattle. Go to Performance Bikes in your area. They have nice Fuji and Scanttante Road Bikes in your price range.

Also, Recycled Cycles and Velo Bike Shop in Seattle carry used bikes (probably other places too, those are the ones I know off the top of my head).
