Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Updating old Trek

I have an old Trek 400 that someone gave me and I would like to change some things to fit me better. I would like to have a more upright position. I am new to cycling
and I'm wondering if a LBS would be able to fix me up. If so, how expensive would it run?
I'm looking at a new stem and possibly new handlebars to raise me up some.
Any advise would be appreciated.

they should definitely be able to help. my LBS charges $50 for a basic fit, and if you want a new stem or something, you have to pay for it separately (unless you just bought the bike there). a complete fit costs over $100, but they spend a lot of time watching you ride on the trainer, swap stuff out, etc.

that's just mine, though. no idea how it varies from shop to shop...you should go to yours and ask them. they won't bite.

I hope to take the bike to the LBS this SAT to see what they can do. The bike
was given to me and since I'm new to cycling I thought I'd fix this up cheaper than buying new and If I like it and stick with it then I can upgrade. I appreciate all
the help I can get!

if the bike has a quill stem, which it likely does, you can raise it without much trouble at all, simply loosen the top bolt, lightly tap the slug down with a mallet and pull the quill stem up, then re-tighten, very simple.

I've loosened the top bolt too much and I can't get it to thread back in. So just tap the top of the stem down
to loosen and then pull up, right? I'll try that later today, thanks. Also is there any way to adjust it back
more towards the seat?
