Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New 105 5700 brakes are kind of heavy

I'm upgrading my brakes to 105's and noticed that they are significantly heavier than the generic no-name brakes that came with my Z85. That is all.

I've never noticed much difference in function between different forged dual pivot short reach caliber brakes as long as they had decent pads. This from having used DA7700, rival, r600 (longer reach), tektro 720 and some kind of nashbar (jailbrakes?). I usually use the stock pads until they wear and then replace with kool stop salmon. Once the pads are replaced they all seem to work well and predictably.

I am a little disappointed. I might put the old ones back on and sell the 105s.

This makes me much happier about the Giant TCR Composite (That I'm currently lusting over) not having 105 brakes.
I wonder where the Tektro TK-R540s are on the scale...

Yes. So I guess it is an upgrade in that regard.

I didn't know that the main function of a brake is to be light weight. I thought it was for stopping.

It is, but the new 5700 brakes are advertised as super lightweight...and at 176g each, they are light. I assumed they would be lighter than the stock generic brakes.

I believe that Felt uses Tektro brand calipers w/koolstop pads on some of their F and Z series bikes. At least that is what my 2009 F75 came with. I once weighed the stock calipers w/pads against a set of 105 5600 and the Tektros were slightly lighter than the 105's according to an analog food scale that I have. My Felt has Ultegra calipers and pads, and they were slightly lighter than the stock calipers. My 5600 105's are still brand new and will be put on my Jamis eventually.

I'm really trying not to become a weight weenie, but the 5700 claims to be 30g lighter than the 5600. I don't have a scale, but when I took the rear stock caliper off I could tell it was lighter than the 105 caliper (which visually is a lot beefier). The Ultegra calipers are about 10g lighter than the 105s.

mid level Tektros are comparable to Ultegra weightwise. the only reason to switch to 105 would be for asthetics. which is very important.

haha, i guess you're not doing too well. careful...sometimes if the brakes are too light the entire bike just floats off the ground, and then what good are brakes at all?

I got them for a really good price, so at worst I have some nice bike bling. Maybe they will last longer than the generic ones. Plus, now I know how to change calipers...so I gained some knowledge also.
