Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Apex shifters mech. disc brakes?

I am putting together a new road bike with disc brakes and hoping to use Apex shifters to power the brakes. Will this work? are they only short pull? I could just wait til they get here later this week but I am looking for some heads up.

Thanks

They'll work. In fact, Salsa's Vaya for this year has Apex with discs, and so does Jamis's Aurora Elite.

Just make sure the brakes are road discs, not mountain discs, so they match the pull on the levers.

so only the road version will work? I suppose I can list my mountain bb7's to make up the cost but bummer.

Yes. Avid sells both the BB5 and BB7 in road versions.

Also, make sure you attach the inline adjuster that comes with the Avid BB5/7 road disc brakes. Otherwise, you wont get great braking power.

Someone recently posted on BF about using the mountain calipers with road levers. He said that they stopped plenty hard, but lacked lever travel and modulation. I'd still switch to road calipers. They worked fine when I had a Schwinn DBX with older Tiagra and road BB7 brakes.
