Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Doesn't anyone make non-compact geometry frames anymore???

Where, or where did the standard geometry frame go?

What makes a compact frame so much better that you pretty much have to get a custom frame nowadays if you want to ride a standard geometry?

As a taller/bigger rider (6'4", 220#), I think I look pretty stupid on all of them. From an "artistic" view - I think they look ugly and un-natural.

Obviously I'm in the minority. Either that or the bicycle manufacturers sure are good marketers...

Anyhow - who the heck makes standard geometry road frames and bikes nowadays, that don't cost a mint just for the frame?

I sure do miss my old Bianchi Campione.

Just rambling.
Enjoy the ride!

Colnago EPS and C59, they do cost a mint or two though. On the plus side, they come in your size. Mine is a 63cm.

Dropkick some 90s Ti. Before the transition, plus its Ti. And the larger sizes are considerably affordable.

I ride a Calfee. They make traditional looking frames. Their lowest price frame is about $2,000 but you can find them used on Ebay. Calfee is one of the few companies that will allow a warranty to be transfered.

Am I wrong? I thought Cannondale was still standard frame size?

Nope, they are a compact frame, although they appear to be the least compact looking that I've found.

Several of the BikesDirect offerings are standard frames and very good deals if you check their prices. https://www.bikesdirect.com/

This is a good deal on a nice but inexpensive frameset: https://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_S...ls&ProdID=1041

There is always Ebay too.

Depends what Cannondale you are looking at. The Synapse is compact, the CAAD10 and SuperSix are pretty much non-compact.

Wondering if some of the welders on Kodiak could build you up a Alaska-tough/non-Cheechako bike?

I used to think that when compacts first came out. Now that I'm used to compacts, I like the looks a lot and think traditional is very old and outdated.

Their waiting for the last of us straglers to cross over. Then some 'new' research will show how much better standard geo is and 3 years later compact frames will be old and dumb.

The next "great frame design" will be a newer version of the mixte frame.

Many Pinarellos are very close to level top tube, although with all the organic curving carbon tube shapes these days it's almost becoming an meaningless concept.

Found a few small framebuilders online that I may commission to build me a new steel road frame. It's interesting - I'm a techie sorta geek in all aspects of my life except for bicycles. Kinda "stuck" in that mindset for some reason.

Bikes Direct is selling Kestrel's RT 800-framed bikes. Those are almost traditional shape.

Actually, they all DO have sloping top tubes. Just not so much as some manufacturers.

We really mean sloping top tubes as opposed to horizontal.

its just so much easier to fit a range of riders using compact geometries.

as to the OP (spicy):

just go oldschool and buy a used frame. that what I did:

anything after 2002 will sill have the standard BB/Derailleur/headset measurements (or just do a quick google search).

the only weird thing for mine was the 1" headset. but I still was able to slap sram red on it and even find a all carbon fork with 1" steerer.

plus its "standard" geometry.

actually these 5000 series frames from trek were weird... they looked standard and had horizontal top tubes but fit slightly small. its like they did the opposite of compact and had the headtube really small causing a slight tilt on the top tube downward.

A lot of BMC's have horizontal top tubes.
