Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Rides/Exercise - March 12/13/14

What's going on this weekend?

It is Labour Day weekend in Victoria and Tasmania, and Monday is also a holiday in several other States here as well. It is apparently Commonwealth Day in Canada ... although that's not a holiday. Maybe it should be!

And apparently it is the start of DST in parts of the US and Canada. Lucky you! Australia's DST will be ending in about a month. Bah! We should just stay on DST all the time.

Anyway ... did you get out for a ride this weekend? How about other exercise activities?

Friday - usual 3.2 km walk (I walk about 15 km a week) and 25.4 km on our single bicycles after work.

Saturday - 120 km ride on singles with 877 metres (2877 feet) of climbing. That's our hilliest ride in a long time. I was dragging the last 10 km or so.

Nice day - the temperature topped out at a humid 28C (82F). The wind wasn't bad, but at its windiest there were gusts to 30 km/h.

A beautiful day for a ride today...81 degrees...moderate winds...not a cloud in the sky...and I didn't ride. Maybe tomorrow.

Sunday - 20.5 km. We had intended to do a longer, recovery-type ride today, but got chased back to the van by a storm. A storm might not be a cause for a great deal of concern, but the area where we were cycling is prone to flash flooding, and before our route was blocked by quickly rising water, we thought it would be best to turn around and head back.

Did the 20 mile bike shop ride this morning, then got sidetracked onto some home repair stuff instead of riding this afternoon.

Did a 57 mile mile ride this afternoon, Elfin Forest route for people familiar with the San Diego rides. Averaged 19.1 mph and had ~2500 ft of climbing

I plan on going to the SDBC Sunday group ride tomorrow for fun, shouldn't be too bad.

Again, another weekend without much distance on the bike. The good thing is this is the 2nd weekend that I rode with my niece (13km last week and 17 yesterday). She wants to ride more, but never had the confidence to go out with anyone else, coz they just rode too fast. I stayed with her and explained the gears and how to use them (very simply and by using the numbers on the (MTB) gear changers).

She is starting to feel better on the bike paths (we only average 10km/h) and is looking forward to the next ride with me.

The last time we rode in the area, a big storm came over and deeply flooded the road right where we road today. We had to take a major detour on that occasion to get out of the area -- we were in our four-wheel-drive van and even then weren't willing to risk the fast-flowing water.

Saturday 3/12 - Did a 10 mile loop around the neighbor 3 times total elevation gain of 1200 ft.

Sunday 3/13 - Did a ride from Ashburn, VA Purcellvill on W&OD. Came back via Rt 7, Harmony Church Rd, Woodburn Rd to W&OD trail. Head wind for the first 20 miles of the ride. You would think that if I have headwind out, I should have headwind back in but it just did not seem like it was the case. Did my first decent climbs in a couple of years...Just happy to make it up these things after struggling against the wind for the first 20.

Monday - Labour Day!

73 km bicycle ride on singles, with Rowan ... with approx. 630 metres (2066 ft) of climbing. For some, that's not much, for me that's a lot of climbing.

Although there was a prediction of rain, it did not materialise and today turned out to be a lovely day for cycling ... blue sky, sunshine, light wind, moderate temperatures.

It's been a good long weekend for cycling ... 213 km of cycling all up!!

One of the quiet country roads in the area

Geese!! Well, sort of ...

Machka in the middle of a climb

See the orange thing ... that is not something on the road, it's a butterfly, flying through the air!!

62km on Friday as I took the day off work. Having problems with my Extralite front hub, so cut the ride short.
