Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

road trip to cycle

i recently got my first road bike and im trying to learn this sport. recently i was told or office would be closed for 3 days in april so i'll get a 5 day weekend. with not much time to financially plan for a vacation, im thinking about going on a road trip alone with my bike. i live in western KY and im looking for a place i could go that isnt to far away where i could camp and ride. i have considered gatlinberg TN, is there anywhere else i should consider? how do i find locations that are safe to ride using the internet? google isnt helping me much. nothing is really specified as to the riding being for road bikes or mtn bikes.

That whole region around Nantahala National Forest (south of gawdy Gatlinburg) and Chattahoochee National Forest has GREAT riding.

You can't really go wrong in those parts.

The traffic in Gatlinburg is terrible, plus all of the road construction in the area. I would seriously think about going somewhere else for a bike tour.
