Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Was the dog chasing after you, or did it just inadvertantly walk into the road at the wrong time?

Glad yo see you're ok... Those pictures are intense. I would just drive by the area every once and a while to see if you see the dog wandering around again. See what house it is near.

And maybe I am just asking because I am a dog person, but was the dog ok?

The dog ran away seemingly uninjured. I am a dog person too so I was concerned (about an hour later) about the dog as well. This was in a very remote area with no cell service and no houses nearby. The dog was acually chasing or dunning from something and emerged from dense cover leaving neither of us no time to react. It didn't act pissed at all. It was eerily like the dog in the video except it had no owner around to run too. It did run away though.

How do you do it?
As a practical matter, your options are limited. You can ask the cops as well as people in the area. However, the sort of people that let dogs run wild are not always reasonable, chances are you won't be able to prove anything, and even if you can, that's no guarantee that you'll get any compensation. Not everyone has insurance/assets, particularly when you go out in the sticks.

Even if the dog did have an owner, it would be the owner's fault (unless it was some sort of an amazing accident). In this case, it seems to be a stray. I have found several dogs in the past years because when I see a stray dog, I actually stop and get the dog. We use friends and the power of the internet to get all of them adopted. Dogs are great and even if you encounter one that is aggressive, it is very likely that it was abused, by a human. Good that both of you are ok.

Time for a new carbon fork and some nice wheels!
This is my take. Glad you weren't hurt worse.

Glad you are not seriously injured, that could have come out very differently.
I nearly hit a coyote on the back side of Usery Pass once and for sure scared the daylights out of me. It was dark and my two Magic Shines gave loads of light and the coyotes stopped in the road and watched me go by. I guess you know I was thanking God the rest of the way down the mountain.

I had a dog cross me at 18 mph but I was on my all steel vintage bike with Shimano aluminum clinchers. Nothing broke but the handlebar tape. I was scraped up somewhat but nothing broken. I feel for you, man. Judging by the pics, you must have gone down bad. Hope you're recovery goes well & fast. Which Pinarello are you looking at getting BTW? Curious.

this is a good time to be friends witha lawyer so maybe he will call the owner for youand use big words like Liability, damages, settlement, pain and suffering, and the chapter and line number of your local dog / leash laws.

glad your OK too bad about the bike.

when I first read the title I thought the dog chased you down and bit you. I have been chased alot but the only dog that ever won was when I was about 7. he didn't bite me but scared me so bad, I *blushing* jumped off the bike and ran home

I had two chihuahuas and a weenie dog chase me this weekend. One border collie thought about herding me but her owner changed her mind.

You seem to be taking this well. Sounds like an innocent accident based on your description. Don't sue, chalk it up to an accident. I almost was hit by a deer last week. I don't plan to sue Rudolph or Bambi.

Come on, this is America - land of entitlement and being able to sue for anything. That kind of talk might put some lawyers out of work.

It wouldn't surprise me if someone tried to sue the park service or something over something like that.

Hi "On Your Right" If it is a stray dog and you could find it. Then adopt it, so you know you'll never run into it again. It could also be your best friend.
