Trek Madone 6.7 paint finish flaws ("haziness")?
New to the forums so if this post should be in one of the other forums please let me know.
I just purchased a 2011 Trek Madone 6.7 SSL. Love the bike but have noticed that on the black areas of the bike frame there appears to be some "haziness" in the clear coat in multiple areas. I'm not so concerned about this on the seat post area but there are multiple areas on the frame (top tube, rear stays, etc) where this "haziness" appears. I tried to polish an area and it did not appear to improve it so I believe this is something under the clear coat and related to the carbon fiber. This is not a carbon fiber "weave" issue....it is something else.
My main question is if other Trek owners have seen this? I have done some searching and have found at least on reference to this from another rider but thought I would see if there were others.

Maybe moot....when is "just purchased"? And did you walk out with the exact bike in the store, or they made one for you sight unseen based on a floor/demo model. IOW, shouldn't have walked out of the store unless you were completely satisfied and there were no apparent/obvious blemishes. If you just got it, as in, just the other day, talk to your LBS.

Then you may have a legit warranty claim. Have you even ridden it? If you haven't, don't, until this is resolved to your satisfaction.

The black painted areas on my 2010 P1 don't look like that, except on the seat post where there is a clear demarcation between painted and unpainted. Looks like it might have been made on the painters Friday.. that or they were going as thin as possible on the paint to save weight. If you don't like it, take it back. I say it's not normal.

I've had it for a week and rode a few times. The dealer said there is a one year warranty on the paint when I emailed and questioned the markings. I guess I'll bring it in for them to look at.

Not sure of how the 6 Series frames are manufactured, but I remember a few things after talking to Mr. Know-it-all at a Trek store last year. Judging from the pics taken, it looks like these are the areas where they bond the pieces together. It could be some kind of a reaction from the bonding agent with the paint job. I remember seeing the 5 Series frame with this kind of issue. It's not present on all of the frames though, so yours, if the 6Series is manufactured the same way a the 5, is one of a few that has this "unique" look! LOL

It has nothing to do with the paint. That's what carbon fiber looks like. It is present on all the frames, it's just covered up by paint on many. The op's pics are raw carbon with clear coat(there is metal fleck in the clear coat). It's normal. Don't worry about it.

Thanks all. Took bike in and compared against another series. I thought the same about the clear flake and that is what it is. The one I compared against did not have any flake and the carbon definitely showed more. All is well and I am happy. Picked up the white carbon stem while was there.
