Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

training question

I have been training for a 50 mile ride coming up on the 30th of april. I started in feb. and have 420 miles in so far. This week I feel realy week and the rides that I usualy do feel harder. my times and average speeds are down. At the beginning of each ride this week My legs felt spent right off the starting block. Do I need to take some time off the bike? I have two weeks untill the big day. How should I use them?

like any workout you need recovery days, also if you have been sick or anything that will make your rides harder as well. Have you been riding every day? If so how many miles and what kind of riding?

Are you mixing up your rides - longer / shorter / faster / slower / hills / flats? Does your training include recovery rides and days off? Changes in diet / sleep? Sickness? Weather conditions? Keeping track of all the variables will help you peak for your goal on the 30th.

Some days I feel like I can ride forever - next time out I get worked. Maybe I get overconfident and push too hard out of the gate. Humbling when someone blows by me on their fully-loaded commuter and I'm sucking wind 15min into my ride. When I doubt I blame the wind.

Could be over training. Or some sort of illness or injury.
420 miles in 3 months is really not a lot. But if you were starting from zero, then you need to take care not to ramp up too quickly.

maybe you're sick. maybe you haven't trained enough. not likely that you're overtrained with 420 miles. maybe you're just in a lull.

Where does one start to hit overtraining in number of miles per *insert unit time*?

Any general figure?

Some people can ride 500 miles/week or more without overtraining. Depends a lot on your fitness level and intensity.

Generally, if you increase your mileage or intensity more than 10% per week, then you have to be careful about burning yourself out.

I'd say stop riding with people. Ride by yourself at your own pace. Spin the pedals and stop throwing up just because you're riding so hard. If you're just trying to make 50 miles without dying, you can do that by riding a consistent pace keeping your heart rate low. It sounds like you're making yourself sick and bonking because your nutrition is lacking and you are riding at a heart rate that isn't sustainable for you. Keep it below 140 bpm, stay in a higher gear, spin and ride a consistent rpm. Do that and you'll gain fitness.
