Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

riding with saddle sores

Hi

I have a lingering saddle sore form last weeks 4 hour rainy ride wwhere my tights got soaked

I've been cleaning it and applying polysporin and covering it on gauze

I've going out tomorrow to see a new race loop

I was wondering what others have done in the past to protect the saddle sore while out on a ride?

DestinX baby diaper rash cream is your friend. it will heal AND protect the area without bandages or gauze. those coverings are sure to cause you other issues. you want the version with 40% zinc in it. apply it morning, noon, and night (to a clean area of course). the stuff works miracles and i have tried numerous options. later.

Frankie Andreu came close to winning the final stage in the Tour with a saddle sore.

Specifically

I just stop riding. A week or three off the bike isn't going to kill me.

HTFU and try PreparationH.

Don't laugh - it's a pain-killing anti-inflammatory.

There are several kinds of saddle sores. One is a red, tender spot, another is close to being a boil, and still another is a hard, cyst like pimple. Riding with each poses a different situation

Boil-Ease helps, Chamois butt'r in the general area. Solarcaine also has a numbing effect. However, my saddle stores aren't on the sit bones, they are more in creases/folds where legs become part of the torso. Lancing can relief the pressure ... for a while.

I don't think getting soaked had anything to do with it. Keeping the area clean is important. Getting out of your shorts as soon as a ride is done and showering is critical. The use of antibiotic ointments once developed will do nothing, the infection / abcess is deeper than the ointment is effective for. If bad enough then antibiotics by mouth would be far more effective. Prevention is the key. Shorts that are clean and fit properly are critical and doubling up shorts will only make it worse , not better. Preparation H? don't think that will help much.

Lately I've been getting both types above, what I found works for me is to wash asap and apply PersaGel 10 by clean and clear.

A comparable product would be just about any cream with zinc oxide. You probably should have been using that right from the beginning.

I swap between different types of saddles I have lying around so that pressure is transferred to an area where no sore exists. For example, from a Fizik Aliante to a Selle SMP Evolution. Works for me.

I stick with a saddle that works ... but I swap between shorts. I have quite a collection of different shorts. One might be comfortable one day, another might be comfortable the next.
