This n00b needs wheelset advice...deal or no deal...help.
Hey all, thanks for reading. I just signed up and this is my first post ever. I just bought a 2011 Allez Comp as my first road bike (been riding a hybrid for 2 years) and I have a question about its wheels. It comes with Mavic CXP22s which are (according to reviews) very heavy. My friend offered me a set of Mavic Aksium, with tires for $200. Is this a deal for me or should I ride the stock wheelset. Im 200lbs by the way...does that matter? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ride the 22s for a while. Aksiums aren't a decent upgrade, plus you can get them new for 200 anyway.

I don't think you will notice any difference. Get some miles in ...learn what you like & don't like about your bike. Get stronger, get experience, and don't let the placebo of random upgrades fool you. Wait until you have an actual reason to upgrade something.

save your money. if you want decent wheels, youll need about 500 bucks. looks at soul wheels. theyre pretty cheap, light, and durable for your size. also tires make a difference. i dont know about tires cause i just use whatever but of course tires matter just like everything else on a bike.

I have a pair of those Mavic CXP22s and a pair of 1150 gram wheels as well.
For anything but racing, the CXP22's would be fine, just a little heavy, but you are, too, so keep them.

don't buy the aksiums..do what most folks do and get an expensive set for racing or some other events and ride the mavics - they're great wheels and they're fine

+1 on what Tonski said.
I got into road biking last year and my bike also came with the CXP-22s. While it was tempting to get a cheaper-priced wheelset that was said to be an upgrade from the CXP-22s, I held off until I could get what should be the only upgrade wheelset I'll purchase. I went with some HED Jet 6 FRs and can tell a world of difference over the CXPs. The bike responds and handles differently with the HEDs.
My reason for the upgrade was to reduce rotating weight and get an aero wheel.
I kept the CXP-22s and will still use them.
Honestly, I'd stay away from the low-end upgrade wheelsets.

Yep, unless you're 6'6", lose some weight while saving up for a truly worthwhile set of wheels. The CXP22s will work just fine until then.
