I was perfectly happy with 9 cogs.

I'm in the throes of new-bike-itis which appears to be fatal, and trying to decide what to put on my new compact double. I love the high end, the low end (30x27) and the close gear spacing of my triple. I do long rides in the mountains and need to be able to ride up 15% grades at mile 90, hopefully without being required to stand.
What cassette is best? (Dura-Ace group).

I'm waiting for the twelve speed before I make the jump.

There are always the zealots and true believers.
I know several people who tried it and quit it. Broken chains (numerous BTW), shifting issues, Etc. I also know a lot of people, myself included, who were long time Campy users and have moved or are moving to SRAM or Shimano. There are a number of issues intrinsic to the race crowd that make 11 speed a non starter.
I know of no one who has moved off other platforms to go to 11.
And the very large price drop for 11 since its inception is a pretty good indicator that the market isn't stampeding away from 10.

I do not own 11 speed but the people I have talked with that own it haven't had reliability problems with it and I have heard from a few people on this forum that switched from some other group to Campy 11. As for the price drops, prices usually come down as a product matures. The price of DI2 has come down as well.

But adding more gears will negate any weight-savings in other parts

I wasn't happy with nine cogs after replacing my triple crank.
While I get the same range with 50-34x13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23 that I had with 50-40-30x13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21 the only overlapping gears which aren't fully cross-chained are 50x21 and 34x14 so there's a lot more double shifting in the wrong wind/terrain.
With no triples or 13 starting cogs (both missing from SRAM's lineup and Campagnolo's latest offerings) I'd need 11 speeds to get what I wanted like 46-36 x 12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-25; although with an extra 30 pounds of fat and legs that are no stronger I want a 12 speed 12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-26-29 cassette and matching shifter. I didn't spend thousands of dollars to have a bike built from a frameset to be stuck with sub-optimal gearing like 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-26-29 11 speed with no 18 cog. I'm hoping that comes soon like the 3 years between 9 and 10 speed and not the 8 years between 10 and 11.
OTOH, the widest range cassette in Campagnolo's 12 speed patent application is a 12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-25-27. Maybe 12 isn't enough and contentedness will elude me until Campagnolo sells 13 speeds with 12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-25-27-29.

Perhaps now the compact double will make more sense to you.

Exactly what I was thinking. My first road bike had 5 cogs, and if you asked me in 1982 if I wanted/needed more, I would have said no. Fast forward to today, and I'm plenty happy having a 10 speed cassette. And in another 29 years, I'm sure I'll be plenty happy with my 42 speed cassette.

I just wish Campy hadn't dumbed down their 10 speed groups with the escape mechanism this year. I'm plenty happy with 10 speed, but if I want to dump five cogs now I need to upgrade to Chorus 11. Wish I had snapped up a few more Centaur 10 2009/10 levers last year while they were on closeout.

What irritates me the most is that the RANGE of the gears didn't change much.
My 7 speed cassette is 11-28, and my 10 speed cassette is STILL 11-28.
The 10 speed actually feel worst, since the ratio are so close, sometimes I don't even KNOW if the chain have completed the shifting, and hammer down only to find less pedal resistance than expected...

Campagnolo still makes 10 speed second generation ergo levers. About $240 from the UK for Chorus and $290 for Record.
Right 10 speed Ultrashift mechanisms are also available for $90-$100 to downgrade an 11 speed shifter (if Campagnolo hadn't stopped selling small parts it'd have been half that for an index disc and front ratchet; maybe you could find a crashed shifter to cannibalize).
Of course, if you already have enough second generation levers you're in good shape until brake hoods, G-springs, G-spring carriers, and thumb lever return springs get discontinued and you exhaust your parts drawer supply.

If having less gears would be a good thing we wouldn't waste extra weight on useless coggs, would we?

I didn't know that Campy dumb down their 10 speed shifters. I have a used set of Record 10 from probably 2007 or 2008 but they are ultra shift. I have heard that I can have them rebuilt as my bike isn't ultra shift. I guess I will hang on to them now. I was planning on upgrading my Chorus triple to 11 speed but I am now having second thoughts. The triple works well and of course I already own it so why spend more money.
I would like to replace the left crank arm. It has taken a few rocks at high speed and looks like it has been beat with a hammer but still works fine.
