Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When riding the trails, no. when riding busy roads and on long distance rides, yes. A handlebar mirror.

You'll notice that older cyclists are predominantly mirror wearing Freds while only a minority of younger people use mirrors. Most of the old cyclists have been riding much longer than the youngins. Just sayin'....

You're missing an option: sometimes. When I'm commuting I'm an all-out Fred, panniers, fenders, helmet mounted mirror, MTB helmet, steel fork, etc. Then on weekends my alter ego comes out on the road bike where I have a road helmet and no mirror.

I wear a sunglass-mounted mirror only because I normally ride alone on very rural roads.

I have a STI shifter mounted mirror. I commute daily and do long rides on the weekends. It's nice, I like it. Who cares if I look like a geek.

I've use one of these for "decades". Honestly...for decades. Longer than I can remember. It's a mountain bike mirror, but works well on the left bar end of the drops. Only diff from this Amazon picture is that I have the mirror down instead of up. When up like in this picture, it interferes with grabbing the brake or when I go onto the drops. I also need to be careful on which side I lean the bike against a wall. Shakes a bit on rough tarmac, but clear enough to let me know when something is back there.

mirrycle.com - only thirteen bucks on Amazon - most bike shops carry them too

I once asked a guy if he liked his sunglass mounted mirror, and he asked me how I like the rear view mirror in my car.

I find it okay to ride without a helmet, but it'll take a gunpoint to get me on my bike without my mirror.
My favorite is the CycleAware glass-mounted mirror. Once I stared using it, never looked back again.

What do mirrors do for you while on a bike? I don't get the point of them.

you get a better view of what's behind you without having to look over your shoulder.

But what is that going to do for you? Are you constantly checking a mirror to see if a car is about to run you over? And if so, do you think you'll be able to get out of the way? Do you only use the mirror (and not look over your shoulder) when turning or changing lanes?

I'm not trying to be argumentative here, I'm genuinely curious. I feel like a mirror would be more of a distraction to me than useful, like I would always be nervous when I would glimpse a car in the mirror. I hear them coming up, so I know about when they'll pass me, and I think if I saw a flash in the mirror I would tense up.
