Do you need to wear a helmet on a trainer?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i always do on the road but i have no ideal why in the world you would want to wear a helmet on a trainer. its hot enough already and you dont have to worry about crashing (unless on rollers)

The ketsup thread clued me in that you know more than you lead on.
You know you need the helmet on the trainer to simulate your P1-2 races.
Sunscreen too, so you can practice riding with stinging eyes.

No you don't need to wear a helmet on a trainer. Helmets are required on the road to protect you if you get struck by a semi tractor-trailer truck. It is supposed to save your life. After getting run over, you just get up, brush yourself off, straighten your handlebars and helmet, and continue your ride. Unless you expect a semi to come crashing into your living room, you don't need a helmet.

Which certainly is possible.

I would suggest wearing the helmet.

Of course. You want to simulate your real world riding as closely as possible. Full team kit is a good idea too, and a strong fan is useful for getting realistic trajectories on snot rockets.

Wearing a helmet on a trainer makes you look like a high-falutin' poseur roadie.

Therefore you must be sure not to wave.
