Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A day of firsts!

Finally broke the 20 mph average for a ride. Did it on usual 20 mile loop but actually added another 5.6 miles in for total of 25.6 miles. I was riding solo like normal and conditions were pretty calm. I was a little surprised since I just spent a month down at sea level and am now 2 days back home which is over 5000 ft above sea level.

While gone I was riding a backup bike with just an old hand-held Garmin to track speed and distance. I felt that I was spinning faster than normal but had nothing to measure my cadence.

On today's ride my average cadence was 84 which is about 10 rpm higher than my normal average. Guess I'm finally getting the spin thing down.

It was also the first time I wore bibs. Picked up a pair of Pearl Izumi on clearance and figured I'd try them out. Truth be known, they worked fine but I don't see where they did anything for me that my shorts didn't do.

Also this was the first time I put my Brooks Swift on my Madone. I've been riding a B17 on it but spent the past month riding the backup with the swift. Rode the Madone yesterday with the B17 and I could really feel a difference in terms of the width. Felt like I was being forced to ride with my legs too far apart. Threw the swift on this morning and it felt better.

The other first was back spasms the minute I got off the back. I've never had that happen on the road bike and it worried me a bit as I've ruptured disk in my back twice. Not sure what caused the problem today but I hope not to see a repeat of this.

Yesterday I hit 45 mph on my roadbike

Downwind, highest gear, full spinning, downhill

it really sucked to stop at that speed

Also today I sold a bike and for the first time, the person didn't need to be "sold". He arrived, looked at the bike, payed me in full without question and tossed it in his truck. 0_0 my face the entire time.
