Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good upgrade or no

Right now I have a GMC Denali. It's a perfect beginner's road bike. But eventually I think I want to upgrade. I want a nice bike with smooth shifting and smooth brakes, as well as pretty light. The Denali is pretty heavy but it's a beginner's bike, I am learning on it. I was looking at this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Schwinn-Road-B...063726&sr=8-19

I like how the wheels are, like the racing bikes have that extra lip. I think it makes the bike look awesome.

Not a good upgrade IMO, more like a step sideways.

i always wanted a cannondale, but they are just too pricey for me. i want something that will ride nice and smooth like my dad's fuji crosstown bike. its just a simple hybrid bike, but its so light and it shifts and brake so smooth. my denali shifts pretty hard and the brakes are hard and not smooth. thanks.

i was thinking that robbie, thanks, is there anything in the sub 900 range that would be nice? my dad's fuji cost him 400 dollars and its like 10x better than my simple road bike.

If you're riding a Denali this will blow your mind at $699.

Wow! That is a great price. Terrific frame, probably good enough for you to upgrade components on it as they fail/wear.

I know--it was such a good deal that even I had to advertise for BD.

Um wow, that's a really nice bike.

Is there a better bang-for-the-buck bike out there? I think this is it.

If this is free shipping, this bike deal is insane, and I don't even like BD lol.

Just be aware that Bikes Direct, (and probably any mail order bike), will require some assembly & adjustment. If you cannot do that yourself, then add the cost of having a shop do it for you to your total cost.

You can get decent deals on slightly used bikes too.

I'd either go with the CAAD8 ($40 more than the one you listed, and 20x better), or the Schiwnn (this isn't Wally world 'Schiwnn', this thing is legit).

Both are substantially better than anything you could get from Amazon (they really aren't a bike place).

Even I'm reasonably impressed. 105 for $700? Buy it.

He said he wanted to step up and you guys point him at a shimano equipped bike? just messing just messing.

Dude going to something like Dr. Pete's recommendation would be like going from a 747 to a F14. If you're serious about riding it would be a really good choice. I'm anti-Shimano and even I like that bike.

Apparently so.....

That old guy was wrong. It wasn't May 21st or October 21st either. It's TODAY!

(It is a good deal. So are the C'dales linked up higher)

Bike speed varies based on leg strength .... however some bikes have higher quality and/or slightly lighter components and frames, and some are better values than others.

when you get into the $400 range there are some nice used bikes to be had... should be able to find something built in the 2000's with AL frame and lower end components that will serve you quite well for a long time

Something you also probably like about the CAAD is the thick tubing of aluminum and the steel looks cheap to you with it's smaller diameter tubing because it looks more old school. I wouldn't say it's faster, but it will be more comfortable and a nice overall bike. Nothing is going to be faster besides your legs.

that BD bike is a heck of a deal and the MSRP is less outrageous than usual for them so the discount doesn't look as big and it might last longer. Or maybe not.

People have been saying good things about the Gavin Acele> https://www.roadbikeoutlet.com/gavin-...orks-html.html
