Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wiped out by my own water bottle....ugh!!!

Pulled through the quaint little upstate NY town of Windsor, went through the blinking red light, beat the traffic up the hill. I felt so FAST!! I really felt good on the bike, and looked even better I then took a cool swig of water sideways just like the pros do it, to hydrate before hammering my way home, but dropped said water bottle, ran over it with my rear tire, couldn't recover and couldn't unclip before falling onto the sidewalk grass with way too many people watching me. Utterly humiliating, only slightly better than the time I got attacked by a mother goose. Yesterday could well be my Fred moment of the year.

I almost lost it on saturday pumping it hard up a bridge passing cars, pumped so hard my front wheels came up off the ground and went sideways...caught myself before coming down but definitely would have been nasty...I definitely think that was poor technique on that one.

I mean glad you're okay.

I nearly ran over my own bottle once as well. I went to put it back in the cage, and missed. Ended up bouncing down the hill I was descending before rolling into the middle of the road. I managed to get it back between cars.

OMG I'm still so humiliated. I mean, I went down stupid, like a total clutz with my front wheel wobbly and rear suspended in air for a second, just long enough to look like a total jagoff. I threw a fit publicly so it looked like I never ever wiped out before, not sure if I sold it well though...

That is pretty funny. I like that you have a sense of humor about it.

I dropped my waterbottle going downhill when I missed putting it back into the cage. Luckily, my rear wheel missed it.

From that time on I've been very careful and deliberate when taking swig and putting the bottle back.

I want to learn how to do it with hands off the bars though, but I'm too chicken to learn it. Need to find a nice quiet road with no witnesses just in case.

Well, better you wiped out yourself with a dropped bottle than someone else.

I once had a clipless moment in front of a line of cars waiting at a red light. I got up and took a big bow for the audience. It made the shame disappear immediately!

Hey, I just about fell over this morning accelerating at a light with cyclists waiting behind me in the bike lane and two lanes full of cars next to me. Nothing fancy, just lost my balance about 3 pedals in and started to fall. Embarrassing stuff happens to all of us sometimes. Glad you're not hurt.

That is pretty embarrassing, i fell over at a light when more of my weight leaned towards the foot that i was still clipped into, didn't have time to unclip and catch myself and tipped right over. Felt myself falling and couldn't do anything about it. Cars at the intersection and a lady walking her dog at the crosswalk saw the whole thing. I must have scared her dog cause it kept barking and growling at me.

I'm always fearful of this when I'm putting the bottle away or pulling it out of the cage without a good grip on the bottle.

I also had my first spill of the year last weekend.
My the chain kept rubbing on my FD so I peeked down to my rear cog to see what gear I was in, next thing you know, I rode off the road into the grass and went down like a ton of bricks, luckily the left pedal and elbow caught the brunt of the fall.

At least you got your water bottle back today. Mine exploded when ran over by a school bus five miles into a twenty five mile ride.

You could not have looked like a dork...anyone so confident to tell us "hard core" non-Fred pros this story just had to look cool going down! You sold it for reals...made me laugh as it has happened to all of us. Good on ya!

See, and my husband makes fun of me that I don't like to try to take a drink while I'm moving! I'm always SURE I'm going to drop it or just fall over trying to put the bottle back in the cage.

I had a clipless moment the first time out on a long ride with my new bike. Came to a stop and tried to put the foot that was clipped in down...that worked well! I landed on my rear holding the bike over me because I didn't want to scratch it.
