Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

what powertap hub is this?

You would think this is an easy one.

Williams 58 clincher 2010 model.

Sl+ hub cap. But not Sl+ hub shell

What would that hub be worth attached to a Williams 58 Carbon Clincher?

Not sure, but you could look at the pricing of the Williams wheels, figure in the $99 for the ANT+ upgrade, and go from there. I would also just make sure it actually works, since I was under the impression that you could only upgrade the old SLs--hence the cap saying SL+.

Sure doesn't look like it got much use - the splines for the cassette are completely smooth.

Ok here you go with some info you have and Elite+ or Pro+
You can tell now by the axle the Pro+ is Aluminum and the Elite+ is steel at some point the axle also when to 15 mm also so if its smaller its also an older hub,

Price depends on which it is but $950 is a little high I think is that for a head and all?

Pro+ or Elite+. Both use that hub shell. The axle diameter and material would be the difference. If it's the Elite then the non-drive side would have take an allen wrench in the end where the skewer is and there would be a wrench flat for a cone wrench on the DS outboard of the freehub body - funny how that isn't shown in the pictures. If it's a Pro+ then there would be no wrench flat on the outboud side of the freehub body. You just pull it off.

OP have Rob quote you a price on a new one price is about the same as the one you are looking at and you will have warranty, because if you buy used and needs service it will cost you I think its like $380 it have it fixed they have a flat rate and go thru the hole hub.

Do you think this is a good deal. It's a set of Williams 58 Carbon Clinchers Front and Rear with this hub for $950.

This route or the QUARQ. (Which is a definate at some point but these might make do for a bit so I can buy a cross bike also.)

Why would an pro have a SL cap?

And if you decide to pass on the sale let me know if it is still available.

I didn't want to start a whole new thread, but can someone tell me what power it is that powertaps measure?

The way I'm imagining it is: (instantaneous force on cranks)*(sine of force angle)/(instantaneous time)

But the sensors aren't attached at the cranks, so are they measuring this same power, albeit indirectly? And if they are, it seems like a lot of assumptions would have to be made in order to calculate something close to the correct value... if someone knows how they work, I am interested.

IMO, if you know you're going to get a QUARQ eventually, just bite the bullet if you in any way can.

It measures power at the rear hub:

Torque x angular velocity = power (Lordy, I remembered something from freshman physics!!!!!)

Yes, it does fail to account for power losses in the chainrings, chain, and cassette.

There are strain gauges built into the hub arranged radially that essentially measure torque x cadence. That's why no power meter will give you a wattage without a cadence measurement.

I went Quarq. Just think of it as being able to save $1K on any wheelset you buy. If you only have one wheelset and plan to ride it all the time, then the PT is a decent way to go. If you have 2 or more wheelsets (or want the fancy carbon wheels someday) you're better off with a Quarq. Just my very biased opinion as a 2-time Quarq owner.

Another option if you want to save some cash is to search for a wired SRM setup. Those are hovering around $1K on ebay and slowtwitch.
