Ready for new tires
The profile of my conti ultra 3000 is starting to flatten at the crown, so I'm thinking new tires in about two months. Any opinions on a nice fast puncture resistant tire? I'm also kind of inclined to wire bead. Any opinion on the up or downside of wire vs. kevlar?

Option #1: Continental Grand Prix 4-Seasons, if you can afford $50 per tire. Not sure if they come in wire.

I don't know. I might go 50 per if ther was some certainty of durability and longevity.

I bought a Vittoria Rubino on the weekend and so far I'm impressed with it. Wire bead, not too hard to put on/off. Kevlar lined. Not quite as slick as summer tires, but for a bit of winter traction, I don't mind the tiny little bumps on the sidewalls.
And it's black and yellow which matches my bike.

While some tires are more durable than others there is never any certainty about the life of a bicycle tire.
Any bicycle tire is only one broken bottle away from the dumpster.

Flat-proof but not that fast: Specialized All-Condition Armadillos. $30 a piece and you won't ever have to worry about flats again. Wire bead only and heavy but I don't think I'll ever run a different tire (for the non-racing riding that I do). I don't know about longevity yet but at 500 miles so far, they've shown no signs of wear.

unless you really expect to destroy several of them. I splurged for the 4-Seasons because they're supposed to have more
grip than the GatorSkins, which might keep me from wiping out in the rain someday. If you really want to go cheap
you could try the Performance tires that are down in the $15-$30 range. If you want bulletproof you'll have a
harder-riding heavier tire.

I rode Armadillos part of this year. I think I put around 900 miles on them toward the end of the season. They perform as advertised -- no flats at all and I do a lot of miles on a rolled glass bike path. Before the Armadillos I might get three flats in a bad week. That said, I will definitely try something else come Spring. I'd gladly sacrifice some of the flat protection for a better ride!
