Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First ride tonight

So I went on my first ride tonight. I'm totally new to cycling so I just went to a local college stadium and did laps around that. I rode for an hour, doing 16.38 miles with a cadence of 65-80. Cycling is definitely different from anything I've ever done and I'm still definitely going to need to get used to it. I used a lot of muscles that I didn't normally train. Does this seem like a decent first ride? Keep in mind there was no significant elevation change other than a few feet.

Think I'm going to like this cycling thing...

When I started riding I was doing a 12 mile loop and it kicked my ass, so I think 16 is great. If you think you like it now just wait. It gets better. You'll always want to go a little farther, a little faster, a little higher. It sucks you in. Enjoy it!

My first ride I couldn't figure out how to work a presta valve. I rode on tires with about 20 psi in them, contacting rim out of the saddle for 2 weeks before I became good friends with my LBS. "SO THAT THING UNSCREWS" were my exact words.

I'd say you are way ahead of me when I started.

Way, way, ahead.
