Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

On a club ride, do you stay with someone (you don't personally know) who has flatted or do you just keep rolling along?

I don't remember Alberto waiting for Andy Schlek when Andy's chain came off during an upshift. Not nice, was he, Precious?

I hit them over the head with my pump when they aren't looking, steal all their GU and then keep rolling along.

On a club ride if it is someone that I am riding with then yes, I will stop. If it is someone that is riding with others and a couple of other people have already stopped then I don't stop. If it is a hammerfest and there are five or six of us going all out then we all stop.

Team ride? Yes. All-comers race ride (also known as the Hammerfest, the Ride, or the _____ Night World Championships)? Nope, it's every rider for himself.

if it's the drop A-group with the B group (no drop) a couple of minutes down the road? nope. Simply ask if they need anything and keep rolling.

On the other hand, if the group is small and the guy who flatted is the one who takes crazy-long pulls at the front? absolutely. call a nature-break and heckle the guy while he slaps a tube in.

This is great advice until the the guy says he's got everything only to find his glue has dried up after the whole pack has passed and has to hitch a ride back with an ugly woman in a van...and he doesn't have anything smaller than a $10 bill which he offers the lady and she actually takes it even though she was going that way anyhow.

I stopped for an older lady on a motorized bent on Saturday.

She crashed behind us and the "bike" fell on top of her. It was very odd and very loud. She was just laying there in the middle of the road. I felt it my civic duty to help her, under the circumstances.

Are you speaking of personal experience? If you are, it's poor form to be annoyed by the quality of looks someone has who is gracious enough to stop because of your poor planning. On that note, poor planning on someone else's part is not something that I worry about. Any responsible rider rides with a full, serviceable repair kit a bit of cash and a charged cell phone. If you only let pretty girls drive you back, you should have a few #'s stored on your phone for that reason.

Depends on the personal values you live by and how you weigh them against the judgement of total strangers on the interwebs.

No, I just made all that up. Nothing like that could ever happen in real life.

All I'm sayin' is it don't hurt to hang out a bit and make sure. In my "story" the guy with the flat really did try and be prepared I agree with you though and have little pity for people who make no effort to be prepared.

The tea, always stops for mechanicals/flats. Even the Wednesday HammerFest.
No problem dropping someone due to fatigue, but mechanicals/flats aren't (necessarily) their fault.
I use other's flats to recover/fuel up since I'm too busy dying while we're riding.

Off-Topic: I stop for anybody who has a flat and ask if I can help.

On-Topic: Contador will win his 4th TDF and be just 1 away from being one of "The Greats" (5 time winners).

Schleck failed on SRAM last year (losing over 1/2 a minute).
He failed on Shimano this year (losing 1 minute on a TT).
Give him Campy next year and he'll fail again (by 00:01:30 in whatever he rides).
He sucked. He lost. Period. End of controversy.
Alberto even gave up a stage to him (before PWNING him).

^^^^^THIS^^^^^^ to everything you said... I'm a Schleck fan and I hate to admit it, but if Contador rides like he did the Giro and Schleck keeps having the 'component curse' (I facepalmed during the latest TT fail), Contador is going to win the TDF with time to spare.

... and yes, slow and ask if they need help if a brother is sidewalked.
