Need help choosing a set of brakes
Hey guys,
I'm new here - so hello!
Right, so I currently ride a Scott CR1 2009 model (before the big change in design to the new CR1 frame) with a full Dura Ace 7800 drivetrain (minus chain and cassette). The 7800 components however were ex-team and were fairly well-ridden, and as such the front shifting is kind of borked (a combination of the shifters and the front derailleur being worn out by the looks of it)
So I found a good deal on a almost-full 7900 groupset (shifters, cassette, chain, cables, front and rear derailleurs, cranks and bottom bracket) for about $1500 so I jumped on it. I figured that replacing the shifters alone would cost at least $500 around here, and I could just upgrade the whole lot then sell the working parts of my old 7800 groupset to recoup the costs, and hey - who doesn't want new shiny stuff?
The only non-7900 piece of kit it came with, though, are the brakes, which are the TRP 950SL model.
So here's my question - should I use the old 7800 calipers that I currently have and sell the 950SLs, or should I sell the 7800s and use the 950SLs, or should I sell both and buy 7900 brakes?
Currently I'm leaning towards keeping the 7800s and selling the 950SLs because the 950SLs are new and would fetch more money, and also the 950SLs are white and wouldn't match my frame particularly well (see https://vm.gwright.org.uk/bikeyyay.jpg for a picture of the bike).
What do you guys think?

I say keep the 7800's. Or see what they are selling for, maybe sell both and get an Ultegra set (if it will MAKE you money). To keep it simple, I'd just keep the 7800's, but I don't sell on ebay, YMMV.

Hah - I definitely do. But I'm also on a budget and I don't think I can justify spending that much money (for now at least).
I guess the solution is to sell the TRPs, keep the 7800s a bit longer then when I have some more money I can upgrade to the 7900s if I feel like it.

shimano changed the cable pull between 7800 and 7900. Although you could mix the components, technically they aren't "compatible." In reality, I don't think it makes a difference. I'd sell whatever you can get the most cash for (TRP).
+1 on the koolstop pads or swisstop pads on whatever brakes you keep. Just the front calipers tho, keep the cheap stuff on the rear and save a little cash.

You can rebuild the calipers. 7800 is pretty durable. I have used the same 7800 front derailleur on my race bike since 2006, which is about 30k miles (on that bike). It still works like new. Same shifters too. Are you sure it's not just a worn out cable or cable housings?

Definitely not worn out cables. I transferred the groupset to a new frame a while ago and bought entirely new cables for everything, still the same issue. The left shifter is noticeably bent and has clearly been crashed on so I'm pretty certain the shifter itself is busted.
I already use swiss stop pads in my 7800 calipers, and they work fairly well at the moment (with 7800 levers) so I think I'll take the advice here and just keep using those.
