Some pics from the North Cascades

I took my Cervelo camping on Diablo Lake this past weekend, and rode up toward Washington Pass. Unfortunately I had misplaced my water purifier, and summer is finally starting up here ... so I had to turn back when I ran out of drink. I made it about 35 to 40 miles total, with about 4,200 feet of climbing. My Garmin kept losing the satellites in a canyon section of the road, so that's more approximate than I'd like.

It probably means there's something wrong with me, but I enjoyed the ride up more than back down. There were pot holes and sand in parts of the shoulder, and this being my first time on a bike here, I didn't feel comfortable beyond about 35 mph in the shoulder. I guess I tensed up a bit trying to keep my weight further back than normal in case I had to stop quickly, and wound up with sore shoulders.

Cool, I'm going up with a group to climb South Early Winter Spire, Silver Star Mountain, and Kangaroo Temple this weekend. Nice to see the approximate snowpack levels I think I'll take some pickets.

I copy that. I don't necessarily enjoy the climbing, but it's sometimes less stressful that the trip back down.

Think I rode by you that day. Beautiful ride up there. Snow has melted quite a bit in the last week.

I did a bike tour that went up and over Washington Pass a couple years ago. That road is absolutely gorgeous; I had to remind myself to look at the road occasionally so that I didn't ride right off it.

A few more photos - this time, unfortunately, they mostly aren't as good as the first round:

Diablo Lake, about 100 yards from my camp site:

A better angle to see the lake, but a bit washed out:

    I really love mountains.

You really can't do waterfalls without a tripod. And even a carbon fiber Gitzo doesn't belong on a road bike.

Lupines! There were a few bands of dwarf lupine on the side of the road. You can see them on the bottom right.

Obligatory bike porn. I can't believe how shallow the bars are, though. I never look at them from this angle. And yes ... the bottles are Fredly.

    Again, I love mountains!

Almost back "home" to the camp ground:

It was hot, and I wanted to go up there and lay in the snow.

wow those photo's make me want to move out there. sadly im in northern Illinois which is very flat with some slight rollers in the farmlands. That's probably why every 2 out of 3 bikes I see on my Saturday rides are tri/tt frames.

Thanks for looking, everybody! I'm glad it seems like everyone is enjoying the photos.

Not at all, actually. I moved out here because of the national parks, and especially because of the North Cascades, which reminds me a lot of Glacier, in Montana. So luck has nothing to do with it.

    Very nice.

You say you ran out of water? What was all that wet stuff pooling all over the place from melting snow?
