Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's time to upgrade

As I am riding more and more, I am beginning to notice why the sora groupset is low end. After about 200 miles I already have to adjust it. Recently I have been training to go faster and that is when I really feel it. Not that it's making me go slow or anything. More like I can really feel the difference when I am shifting while going fast.

I am looking at the rival or the ultegra. Is it worth putting the rival or the ultegra on a cannondale caad 8?

I know I can get a bike with either ultegra or the rival for about $2000 and I was thinking of just doing that. But the problem is I know I am gonna want to upgrade the wheels too so that's gonna cost me another $1000.

So here are the options.

1. Put $2000 on my caad 8 and upgrade to ultegra or rival and new wheelset.

2. Spend $2000 on new bike that already comes with high end groupset and spend another $1000 on a new wheelset?

Upgrade the caad 8. It already fits you and is a known quantity. That frameset is certainly worthy of the upgrades.

Thanks. Yeah I love the way the bike fits me right now. It's good to know that the frameset is worthy of the upgrades.

I do know how to adjust it. It works good for another couple of hundred miles then time to re-adjust again. I love your analogy lol.

Worthy of upgrades or not, upgrading a ride can cost you some cash unless you are patient and a prudent shopper. Save your cash for upgrades and use it to buy the bike you want instead of turning what you have into something you kinda like.

Then you get to have 2 bikes. You don't get to have enough of those

What are you having to adjust every 200 miles?

My rear derailleur. It doesn't shift smooth after about 200+ miles. Then I readjust it and it's fine for another couple of hundred miles. But if I push it or do climbs, then it won't even last 200 miles.

It's always time to upgrade!

Keep your current frame, as a Campy guy I'd recommend the SRAM as a second choice and oh, yeah, some new wheels, baby.

The fact that you have to re-adjust every 200 miles means you are not doing it right.
What do you have to adjust? Cable tension? Limit screws? How does it act up? Won't stay in gear? Won't shift up/down?

Go on Ebay (or wherever) and go and get an Ultegra rear derailleur and see if that fixes your issue. I was having problems with a Sora rear derailleur on my Jamis and went with a 5600 105 rear derailleur and it fixed my shifting issues.

It's not rocket science. It's basic tightening or loosening of the cable. The fact that it works great after I adjust it means it is done right. Is there something else I need to do to it? What am I missing here?

Maybe the cable clamp at the rd is not quite tight, so the cable very gradually is slipping through.

Thanks joe. I didn't know I can use the rear derailleur from the ultegra with my sora set. I think I will try that. I have a 9 speed cassette though. On the description for the ultegra derailleur says its for 10 speed.

For $34 I think it's worth giving this a shot:

Exactly, it's not rocket science. So if the cable tension keeps changing on you, check why that is, there are only a few possible places. It might be as simple as tighening a screw or getting a new cable.
Try to diagose and fix the problem before you dismiss the product altogether.
This "chuck and buy new" mentality is just dumb.

Too much plastic . Speaking of plastic, a new carbon bike would be about 2K and then you could have a primary bike and a training bike. Or you could spend 2K on the CAAD8 and have a really sweet ride there too.

It doesn't matter. My Jamis is an 8 speed and I believe the 5600 105 specified it was for a 10 speed, so it will work.

I'm just curious as to what year the Sora groupset you're using is from. Mine works fine. In fact, I've had to adjust it twice (once majorly, the other was a quick fix) in 1000 miles.

I will really think about this. Thanks. It can keep me happy until I get new stuff. Or maybe I won't want new stuff after this.

Yeah I am gonna take a better look tonight when I get home. Possibly take it apart and examine it better.

LOL. Where can I get a good name brand carbon bike for 2k?

I got the latest one.

One thing for sure though whether I upgrade or not, I am definately getting new shifters. I can't stand this thumb shifter.

MSRP is $2149 so an LBS should have one around $1999. There are other brands that may offer a better value too.
https://www.cannondale.com/bikes/road...ix-5-105-16454

Still, I would just upgrade the rear derailleur for a far cheaper solution.
