Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does this look sketchy to any of you?

I'm thinking of getting this. is there a problem i should know about this bike? i'm assuming it should be worth way more that $550. is it possible the frame is ready to fall apart or something? I'm going to check out the bike tomorrow so please let me know what to look for.

Nope, it's just an old Kestrel. If anything, it seems like a bit much.

Looks shiny enough, but old, used, carbon, isn't something I'd be all over.

$550 for that? No fanks.

You know he's desperate when he's putting this in his tag:

....decals, true rims, hand bags, stock rims, gear rims....
This too.

no hand barspin,

haha no hand barspin >.<
well if I can talk him down a bit would it be worth it? It seems like a decent road bike to me. I'm just looking for a training/commuter bike. for 500 would I be better off with something in that price range on bikesdirect?

Are you specifically looking for a vintage kestrel with shimano 600?

Just be patient then unless you need a bike right away. I bought a 2008 Trek 1500 SLR with 105/ultegra for $380 a few months ago from some shady guy in Bellflower.

I just moved from a rural area that had a college of 15,000 people in town. 90% of the bikes on craigslist were from the same guy and always had a missing front wheel but it wasn't shady. At least that is what the police told me when I brought it up.

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the kestrel if the components are in good condition and i can talk him down some. I really like it for some reason it's just calling me out..

anyone know what I could tell him while I low ball him? other than the fact that its probably like 15 years old..

Bring 5 $100 bills with you and nothing else. Show it to him and tell him it's all you got. On the other hand, if it's worth $550 to you and it's the bike you really want, you'd be silly to lose it over $50.

The Kestrel and the BD bike are two different animals.

It's 2x8-spd Ultagra carbon vs 3x9-spd 7005 alloy; It's like comparing apples and erasers.

Fit is KING.

in terms of frame size, yes. But if you're asking if I need a 15 year old carbon race bike I don't NEED one but I could certainly put one to work if I had one.

I was texting him and he said he was firm on it because of previous flakes or whatever

I realize this, I wasn't trying to compare the two. I am sure I could get used to either aluminum or carbon they're both completely different from my current single speed steel set up.

Don't get me wrong - the bike is incredibly decent for the money. I was just saying, in some markets, the seller would be asking a bit much. In a market like yours, it's probably a reasonable price.

The 600 stuff was great, as were the Kestrel frames. You're good, no matter what your decision.

The bike is worth the price if it truly is in the shape it appears to be. The wheels alone are worth close to $200. The group, another $350-400 or more as this 600 set is still very popular and finding one in great shape is getting harder and harder, and the frame a couple hundred. These are Ebay prices based on personal experience.
