Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cervelo S5 Geometry Disappointment

I am really ticked off by Cervelo. The overriding aerodynamic factor in riding is the position of the rider (about 70-80%). So, for their new state of the art aero frame, they stand the rider up and make it impossible to get low. Really ticks me off. The tall head tube geometry may be fine for the R series, but not your aero series.

I have a 56 SLC-SL slammed, a 110 mm -17 degree stem, and non-compact handlebars, so I am as low as I can go on that frame. And I do ride much of the time in the drops.

The best I can do on the new S5 geometry is drop down to a 54. I have been waiting to replace my SLC-SL (I want more lateral stiffness) and looks like I will have to get a 54 S3 instead or look at other brands.

Test ride 'em both. I'm sure there's some reason they changed things up, other than appealing to rich Freds.

From their website, it appears this was a major factor in the geometry change.

1) From what I've heard, pros (like Hushovd) are doing fine with a -17 stem, and they designed it off of a mold of Zabriskie's position. Either you're a supar bad a** or you're on a bike that's the wrong size.

2) There are stems that are 23º or even 31º.

3) There are plenty of other high-end aero bikes. If you don't like the geometry, there are numerous options in the same price range. There is no reason to be "ticked off" over this.

Agreed! Grrrrr.

I hadn't seen the major stem manufacturers with anything beyond a 17, and even 17's are fairly hard to find. I'll look a little harder.

By the way, that S5 crosses the Ugly Threshold for me, so no Cervelo for me either.

It's pretty hard to find a Cervelo that's not ugly. They made a few, but most of them look like Jackson Pollack took LSD and puked really nasty shades of red on a bike.

If it's a gaunt Silver Fox Pcad you want, that's what you'll get my little Tropical Vixen.

I like how mine look. But then I don't have to look at them when I ride them. And that's why I own them in the first place.

I love the way mine rides, too. But mine's one of the not-ugly Cervelos. For now. When I upgrade the frame, I'll be glad I don't have to look at it when I ride, too.
