Shimano UG narrow Chain and SG Chain Rings
What is a Shimano UG narrow Chain?
I installed a NOS Ultegra/600 Crankset (FC6400) with "SG" designated 53/42 Chain Rings on my 20 year old Austro Daimler SLE. The rear wheel is an updated Shimano 6 speed cassette with alpine 14-32 gearset. I maintained the original Huret derailleurs and downtube friction shifters.
Now I am looking for a new chain. I cannot find a specific Shimano UG narrow Chain. What will work? Can I use the newer, lighter 8 or 9 speed chains in this set up? What does the "SG" mean on the Chain Rings?
I couldn't car less.
SG means 8 speed chain, IG is 6-7. UG is 9. I believe....I've run IG chain onto SG chainrings...the larger chain to smaller ring is fine..but not reversed...-no IG chain to SG rings...though I did read somewere of a chain that ran down okay.
Bull. SG doesn't mean 8 speed. IG Is interactive Glide. Designed for IG casettes with shift ramps on both sides of the cogs. UG was uniglide, used on early 6 thru 8 speed index systems, never 9 speed.
