Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which bike should I ship for my trip

I'm headed to Portland in a few weeks. I'm not sure which bike I should send. I'm bored at work and would like to hear some input.

Do I take my commuter - 08 Jamis ventura comp - tons of miles

Or

11 Tarmac elite - <300 miles

Ive been reading articles and YouTube-ing how to ship my bike (fed ex).

Thanks for your replies

Also, I don't want to rent.
I have been having pains due to fighting itbs. And adjusting to a new bike. I think renting will be the most painful option.

Take the Tarmac and insure it well. Any reason you can't put it in a bike box on a plane but tell them it's a wheel chair or something else to avoid fees?

Thanks for the replies
I live in Chicago and this will be my first chance to ride some mtn!
I'm learning toward taking the Tarmac.
Flying with it is no option, I have to take the bus/train to the airport

take your nice road bike. the riding here is AMAZING and you'll love it on the tarmac. Don't mess up your fun time. Do it right - live your life. if you loose your bike, get another one.

depends. if you're planning on serious road riding, take the tarmac.

if you're planning on exploring more of portland by bike, take the jamis.

Personally, I love exploring new cities by bike. Way quicker to get around and quicker for me to get my bearings and start to get a sense of direction, without reliance on public transit or car rental (especially if i'm unfamiliar with the city.)

If you plan on doing this ^, take the commuter - you can always putter around the city, and get in some decent road riding on it. (bring road pedals/shoes, and a pedal wrench if you currently have commute-y ones on there) I'd hate having to lock up a new tarmac anywhere outside...

on the other hand, if you're only looking for road riding, bring the tarmac. If you pack it up nicely, it'll get there safe and sound
