Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Soul 3.0 or Boyd Rouleur wheelset?

EDITED:
looking for a lighter wheelset and was fairly set on the Boyd Rouleur 30mm wheelset which comes in at 1545g ($400+$20 shipping)

The soul 3.0SL weighing 1400g ($500 shipped)

my main reason is wanting a lighter wheel with a 30mm profile.

what do you think is a better wheelset? If I understand correctly, the Soul set has some options for customizing colors?

Soul advertises front wheel as 655g and rear at 885g for a total of 1540g. you have a special option to make them lighter or something I'm missing?

Yes, it's 1400g without the skewers I believe. I'm already on the wait list for the 3.0SL (4 wks). If you can't wait that long, you may have to opt for the Boyds.

I'm not positive but Sean may in fact be the only one building his wheels. I'm trying to get a hold of him as I'm interested in the S3.0 wide...which isn't on his site but he told me does exist (and someone on here has them). I had a set of S4.0s that I gave to my dad...I loved them and my dad now does too (dad races so I figured he would get better use out of them). I'm pretty sure it did not take 2 weeks for them to arrive once they were shipped but honestly it has been a couple of years so I don't exactly remember.

You may complain about the wait time, but it is what it is. They're excellent value for hand built wheels - think of it as buying from probikekit, or any other online bike shop located overseas. Incredibly cheap prices, but at the cost of time to get to you.

If you can wait, get SOUL (I am biased because I have the S4.0s), but if you need them quick, Boyd may be able to fill your need in that regard.

Agreed. For a set of wheels that has treated me amazingly well for the last 2 years, 4 weeks isnt that big of a deal

Wider rim (23mm I believe rather than 19mm-20mm)...I haven't gotten the specs yet...keep missing Sean on Skype. HED and others have been using wider rims as they allow the tire to deflect differently and supposedly give you a more tubular ride feel out of clinchers. They are also supposedly more aerodynamic.

These aren't Sean's claims BTW I think HED was one of the first to try it.

Edit: Just heard back from Sean...it's actually a 25mm wide rim.

I'd never heard of this wheelset before, but after a scan through the website, and the above testimonials, I gotta get me a set! The customizable colouring is awesome, as I was looking for a red wheelset to complement my black bike (red cages, tape, saddle).... Seeing as I only race myself I can afford to sacrifice some speed in exchange for aesthetics!

Sometimes you gotta wade through the crap, but the tip on this thread alone makes being on BF worth it. Thanks All- I'll post a quick review when I get the wheels!

If and when you talk to him next, is that a question you wouldn't mind asking?....if you can still run a 23mm tire.

please

The wait is worth it for the Souls. I waited 3.5 weeks for my 4.0s to ship. Once shipped they arrived in Canada 1 week later. I recently snapped a spoke and Sean sent me replacements the day after I emailed him. Great service, great wheels and a great price!

I emailed sean early this morning. not sure when i will hear back from him. Is skype (as in skype video?)the best way to get a hold of him? I was pretty set on getting a set of boyds, infact I was going to put in an order today. but now I'm contemplating holding off till I hear back from sean. as much as I like options, sometimes it makes making a decision harder.

If I recall correctly, Sean said 4 weeks wait time was due to lack of products. I won't expect to get my wheels by first week of September and I'm a firm believer of "good things happen to those who wait;" (unless it's McDonald's Vanilla cone, then I want that made as soon as I step inside the store).

Why not get the lighter Boyd Vitesse wheels with the CX Ray spokes. They are worth the extra $100 and weigh 1483 gm. They would also be available with less wait.
