Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1. Yeah, it's pretty good... if you are mechanically inclined enough to do your own assembly/maintenance. I am, so it is.
2. I have two, a Fantom CX and a pre-prod Windsor Shetland that they decided not to sell (it is one of two)
3. Both bikes arrived just fine.

In fact, the only issue I have ever had with bike shipping was getting the bike boxes up my back steps and into the house. Both times, I did the assembly indoors. Once on a tarp in the living room and once in on the linoleum in the master bath.

That Fantom CX is a great bike for $500.

Unless you were expecting everyone to chime in with precisely the same opinion, what's with the attitude?

And not one poster, in this thread or the one in Road, commented about the national origin of Bikesdirect's products, so your "go America" quip is completely out of place.
I am a clique of 1.

i like bikesindirect.com where the bikes move through a shadowy underworld of middlemen and cutouts.

I may well go the BD route if I ever start actually riding my MTB again. I have the knowledge and ability to order the correct size bike for myself and assemble it when it comes in, so their pricing is attractive to me. Please take the time to update us when your bike comes in to let us know about your exprience.

Oh I will for sure, I"m hoping this forum will be handy in the future.

I dont have tools and dont know how to assemble it...yet I'm still contemplating the attempt..we will see.

I have a bike shop down the street from my house, i wonder how much they would charge me for some simple assembly?

Most bike shops do not like BikesDirect, so be prepared for this, charge might be stiff and service might not be the fastest. The mechanics forum here is awesome, you should check it out. Flat bar road bike should not be too hard of a build. All you should really need is a set of allen wrenches. If any of the parts are carbon fiber, you might need some carbon fiber assembly paste and a torque wrench with allen key sockets. Park Tool has a great website with videos that show how to adjust derialeurs, headsets, etc.

I would say give it a try. If not, see if your shop offers mechanics classes and use them to learn how to assemble and maintain your bike.

Take a look at it before you make a decision whether to assemble it yourself or not. It's really quite easy, and probably doesn't require much besides a set of allen wrenches. Essentially, and this is true for all bikes not just BD bikes, the bikes are 90% assembled. The handlebars are off the stem, the stem is turned backward, and the front wheel is zip tied to the frame in order to fit all in a bike box. Oh, and the pedals are off. Besides that, everything is where it will go in most cases. So - turn the stem, put the bars on, put the front wheel on, adjust the brakes and derailler (there are great online resources and this stuff is easy if you take your time)...thats it. Some people will say you should strip down the whole bike, re-grease bearings, face the bottom bracket etc....but most bikes in shops don't get this treatment anyway.

JSharr - if you do decide to pick up a MTB, check out IBEX bikes. They have a similar business model as BD, but don't sell under old brand names. I have two of their bikes, and like them a lot. Price point might not be quite as good as BD. One word of caution -- they did go out of business for a while shortly after I purchased from them, but apparently new folks bought the brand and are back selling bikes.
