Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Black Guy at the Tour?

I never really thought about it, but apparently so:

https://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...ports_newsreel

Though there are no definitive records to prove this, Tour organizers say Yohann Gène, a 31-year-old professional cyclist from Guadeloupe, is—so far as anyone can remember—the first black rider to compete in the 108-year-old race.

Well we are on stage 19 now so you can probably imagine this has been discussed before, right? That and people get funny about race.

I say it's about damn time!

Any Eastern Asians been in the tour before? Someone get those Keirin racers on a road bike!

Can someone clue me into why it would be racist to point out the first black rider in the TdF rode it this year? Is it racist to say that President Obama is the first black US President?

That article contains another good Jens quote, "Go against the wheel of progress and you get run over."

I wonder how they would shape up against Cav/Gripel/Thor.

but seriously, the reality is that if cycling was common in Ethiopia and Kenya, it would be those countries dominating the tour.

Ive always been surprised that more black guys dont ride road bikes. I think that genetically most black guys are way stronger then the little euro dudes of the tour. I know thats a blanket statement but dont give me flac, you know its true. Look at all the runners and track winners of the last 50 years of olympics. I wana see Usain Bolt on a bike, or Geoffrey Mutai ( won 2011 boston marathon and broke the record). I think its mostly a cultural thing though. Although body type plays a huge part too. But you dont see any white hispanic or asian Cricket players do you?

It's only a matter of time before UCI rules that Sickle Cell is not in 'regs'.

They will enforce this on stage 20 next year.

An article recently appeared in the New Yorker about cycling in Rwanda:

Hopefully he won't be the last.
