Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano R550 wheels performance

Does somebody already has experience with the newest Shimano R550 wheels? The wheels look great and the price is also very interesting. Would be happy if somebody could give some information.

$249 for a good looking basic wheelset with "trickle down" tecnology and a weight of 1852 gms. They are fine wheels.

Another wheelset in the same category and price range, but a tad lighter at 1750 gms, would be the Neuvation M28 Aeros.

How much better do wheels perform or climb for every 100 gram weight reduction?

I ride the 7701s and love them. A friend rides the "Ultegra" version on his C-dale CAAD-5 (I think). He likes them and hasn't had any of the problems I've read about. I think they're fine wheels, especially given the price. One note: getting my tires (Conti GP 3Ks) on these rims is a total !@()*&!.

As far as weight, 100g is probably not that noticable, especially on the hills. Several hundred grams is another story. Ksyrium Elites are ~1800-1900 g; Ascent IIs are ~1500 g; I think the 400 g difference would definitely be noticeable. However, the Ksyriums are probably way stiffer. It is all personal preference ... ya cant have it all (super light, super stiff, super cheap).

Best.

550s? All I see on the Shimano website is the R540. That's what I have on my older bike. This year's model. They are much better than the ones from 1996 that came with it stock. They are fairly stiff, transmitting road feel through the bike. I have them on an older Trek 420, which weighs in at 25.5 pounds, with a Cro-Moly fork.

yup. they look like the new dura ace.

i think they'd probably be great training wheels, though I never tried them.

It seams they are too short in the market for a clear opinion. Anyhow, for the extremely low price in Holland it must be worth to choose them.

If any experience will come later from somebody i will be interested anyhow.

I heard they're not that good. The T/mobile team had comments ont eh Dura/ace wheels they used: not stiff enough. And the 550 are the cheap version of the Dura/Ace. I think the Mavic Cosmos are a better choice. The are on the same price level and weight and proven very good.

Wow, two Dutchies in this thread. Hup Holland Hup! I'd heard good things about the Mavic Cosmos, so I just picked up a black set on Ebay last night (used 50 miles) for $158 including skewers. My choice was based on many good mentions on this board. Don't have any info for you on the Shimano 550's but since the last post mentioned the Mavics I thought I'd chime in.
