Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Uh in a time trial situation isn't the person who comes in first place by definition the person who did the course fastest?

immensely hilarious when you see them tucked in on a 8-10%, mile long climb. Someone didn't tell them that the aero benefit is nil, and opening up the hip angle allows for more power output, not to mention less restricted diaphragm. To boot, they were weaving all over the place.

most bike races aren't time trials, and time trials can't be used for upgrade points. If you are willing to tow me in a mass-start race, you are more than welcome to do so, and i'll be obliged to open it up 2 minutes before the end of the race (knowing that i'm not a pure sprinter) to thank you for your effort.

A triathlon isn't a mass start bike race though.

New scientific evidence has even shown that in every race ever held ... the winner was the one who did the course fastest. Intriguing, isn't it?

I guess that makes me one of those recreational tryathletes who doesn't understand real racing then.

Neither is a time trial.

I think we're going in circles here.

She was a pretty good D3 swimmer, but it's not like she was winning nationals...and there were more than 4 pros at that race. Splitting your training between 3 sports inevitably leads to lower performance in each, aka mediocrity.

Somebody please post something stupid and/or obnoxious and/or face-palmable --- it's more fun that way.

Yes, thank you. Very commendable.

I just want to try and make sure this thread stays off the rails. I think there may have been 2 sensible posts in a row a minute or so ago and was starting to get worried.

You wanna try running against a 'mediocre' pro triathlete? You'll have to run a friggin' 30 minute 10k, or 15:00ish per 5k. That's sub-5 minutes per mile - and they do that at the END of a triathlon. Maybe they're not as fast as the fastest pro runner specialists, but there's nothing mediocre about that. The pros are friggin monster athletes that just happen to choose to do 3 sports rather than one.

This year's fastest high school runner (Lukas Verzbicas) by a fair margin, was trained as a triathlete. Again, definitely not mediocre.

I'm not saying they're mediocre athletes, but compared to specialists, they're mediocre at each discipline. Although a sub 30 10k might break the women's world record. So I guess the guys are pretty good runners...for a girl.

ETA: grabbing the results from international pro, for the chicago tri, it looks like the fastest run split in the oly was just under 35 minutes, not 30 minutes...again, good d3 runner territory. Link: https://www.athlinks.com/time.aspx?ev...ourseid=196047

your OP was trying to address the fact that the strongest (which to try-athletes means fastest) wins. We trying to tell you it's the person coming in first that wins, who may not actually be the strongest.

I met a pair of nice triathletes this weekend. They told me they "really" love biking. Even more so than running or swimming. That being said, the last time they rode was back in March and the furthest they've ridden is a whopping 40 miles!!!

when i want to compare performance in a multidiscipline sport like triathlon to performance in a single discipline within a multidiscipline sport i think of bruce jenner or bill toomey (sp?) and the olympic decathlon. jenner or toomey would not have qualified in ANY of the disciplines within the decathlon as a stand alone sport. not even close...generalists must compromise. the more diverse the events the more compromise.

Ah, I've never actually heard anyone say that the strongest/fastest person should win, hence my confusion. I'm not big on numbers racing though.

I'm a mediocre cyclist, and all I do is ride my bike. Sometimes I do walk but I'm not very good at that either.

My point is this . . . and I'm not going to argue with every tom, dick & harry around here . . . some of you don't get it because you don't want to get it.

The point IS, if you're mediocre at ONE sport how could you possibly ridicule a guy because he's mediocre at THREE sports? For all we know, your one sport might be all you know how to do. And for all we know, HE might be able to wup YOU at your only sport. How hilarious would that be!?

But then again this is the 41, where there are apparently points earned for unsubstantiated hyperbole.
