Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Involved bike sizing question.. I'm not sure how this adds up.

I ride a 54cm single speed bike (dawes sst) but I was looking to rent/borrow a geared bike for a local triathalon.
https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/dawes/sst.htm#specs

My wife, who has a Gravity Liberty 1 said I could probably fit her her bike if I just raised and adjusted the seat. Her bike is a size SMALL. Does it make that much of a difference? Would I be messing up her bike if I used it?

I'm 5'10" 170lbs, 32in inseam if that matters.

There's no way to mess it up unless you can't get the seatpost high enough without going past the minimum insertion point.

okay that's good to know.. Then in terms of geometry... I shouldn't have to worry too much about 3-4 cm difference here and there? I put the bike together myself and took it for a little test ride. It felt all right but I could see how a much longer ride would be an issue.. comfort wise. This is temporary.. I'm saving up for a decent tri bike.

Well, it's not going to be ideal. I think there's a good chance you'll run out of seatpost, and there's a good chance you'll want a longer stem. By the time you do all that it might just be cheaper to rent a bike.

If your Dawes fits you well you have a good starting point. Can you get the saddle to the same height and is the reach the same?

You know. I haven't thought about that. I'm going to have to check that out. Thanks for the advice! I love my dawes.. I did a century on it. I need a little more speed here though.

Looking at the Dawes SST on Bikes Direct, it appears to have a horizontal dropout -- which makes sense on a single speed bike. Not sure if you can mount a derailleur.

At 5'10", I don't know if your wife's small frame is going to work, either. You'll need to jack up the seat, which is possible, but you may also need a longer stem. On the other hand, triathlon bikes often have the seat slammed forward as the riders typically use aero bars, so I guess it could work.
