Installing Speedplay Zero Cleats on Specialized Elite Carbon Shoes
These are my shoes. I'm trying to install some new cleats and I'm paying a little bit more attention and I'm stuck. Neither the 1R/1F or the 4R/4F allow the adapter to lay flat. The flatest I got it had a twist with the centerline being from front/inner to rear/outer.
I'm going to take everything to the shop tomorrow, but does anybody have any hints in the mean time?

I have Speedplays - if you haven't used them before, they are awesome!! You should have an extra shim with your Zeros: it's not a 1- or 4- shim, it's marked "extra". You need to insert it between the shoe sole and the base plate, under whichever rear mounting screw needs to be raised to make it lie flat. Of course, you probably only have one extra shim... Good luck!

I ride that combo along with a relocation plate that allows installing my cleats about 10mm aft or so.
What I did was use small thin washers under the cleat for the small corner screws to provide a flat surface for the cleat to bed against. The three chamfered larger bolts that secure the plate to the shoe have their bolt head protrude slightly proud to the plate because the countersink in the plate is not deep enough to accomodate the shoe bolt heads. Poor engineering really...and simple oversight. Great shoes and outstanding pedals. I have said before if Speedplay ever designed a cleat that would be less sensitive to attachment screw torque, they would have created the best pedals in the world. Even with their suspect mounting system which does allow aft cleat mounting and really why I went to them...to me they are the best pedals out there. Love the Specialized carbon shoes as well.
Hope that helps.
